Back in 1975 I was on a farm in Alabama and that had this electrical fence that kept the livestock from getting out onto the dirt road. My cousins and I used to go through the fence by ducking between the electrical wires but every now and then, I would misjudge and I would receive an electrical shock on my back.

Well on one day, I got challenged to a bet that I could not hold on to that wire for longer than one minute. I took that bet and put my hand on the wire. I received something like 12 shocks but I held on because I wanted to win that bet. It was so painful. But in the end, I won the bet and we all walked down the dirt road to this place called Nixon's Chapel, where they had a ratty pool table that you had to put a quarter in to get the balls to fall out so you could play a game. We played several games of pool that day and I won every single one of them. I am thinking that the electrical shocks improved my pool playing. But it was only for one day. The next day, I played lousy and started losing most of the games. But I was not willing to go back to the electrical fence to get shocked again. I did not want to go through that kind of pain again - even if it did make me a better pool player.
