Embattled Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy told OPB that approximately 150 militiamen have occupied Malheur National Wildlife Refuge Building on Saturday evening.
The militiamen are in Burns, Oregon to support Dwight Hammond and his son, Steven Hammond. They're ranchers convicted of arson, who are due to report to prison on Monday.
The militiamen broke in to the federal building with supplies, including food and a generator. Cliven Bundy spoke to his son, Ammon Bundy, on the phone after they occupied the building.
"He told me that they were there for the long run. I guess they figured they're going to be there for whatever it takes--and I don't know what that means," Bundy said.......

At what point, before we are all reduced to slaves of the bureaucratic totalitarian state, do we finally say enough is enough?
Of course the guys who are occupying this small federal outpost have no standing in the Hammond family’s situation. They should not have interjected themselves in this situation, especially since the Hammond family did not and does not want their involvement.
I never said that people in Oregon should support this group, whoever they are. The citizens of Oregon should support the Hammond family, because it sounds like the feds have been very heavy-handed with them and their property. These outside groups are background noise which is now becoming louder due to their unwanted intervention into this matter.
I understand your frustration FRiend and respect your voice. I suppose in the end it is up to each of us to find the ground where we will yield no more.
These guys are not that ground for me nor will they ever be. They do nothing to advance conservatism, freedom, or the ideals that you and I share and have shared on many a posting. I have listened to them and want nothing to do with them. Their kind will always do more harm than good.
We all vent because we are frustrated with the direction of our nation and the decline of a culture that is part of who we are. These guys are too anxious to manufacture a conflict that they fail to pick a black and white issue - they are stuck in the gray. Not a winning formula for me or conservatism. The FACT that the local Sheriff does not want them there speaks volumes to me. They act like gas cans who are looking for a match. Just my .02. Does not mean that you and I disagree on how screwed up our government is!
Good post @122 - I think the Hammond family will still get their day in court and it does seem unjust at first glance that they supposedly served the sentence and now they are called back to court to serve additional time. If the facts and circumstances are indeed unfair I suspect they will receive relief from the court, but I don’t see how this “takeover” will help the situation.

States can set aside state land for a military base, keep it state land. That way NG troops can use it as well.

I sure didn't. It is now a national story.
The fact that those guys could go to prison for 5 or more years for starting a backfire to protect their land from federal mismanagement of that land is a tyranny that should not be tolerated by any freedom loving individual.
The BLM is a joke. A monstrous joke. The Bundys were right to fight for their access to land that had been open to their family for 100 years. They may be wrong here, but they have more guts than I will ever have. So even if their cause is flawed, their zeal is to be admired. If I'm on the jury, these guys walk.
I love it when the response includes McVeigh. It proves that you either have no idea what you are talking about, or you are a troll. McVeigh was kicked out of the Michigan Militia. Does that help you at all understand the difference between a terrorist and a patriot? Did you know that according to U.S. Code you are considered BY LAW to be part of the militia? Still believe in law and order? Then why aren’t you mustering once a year

The government are criminals. Why would they allow anyone to prevail against them? Are there recent examples of that? Scree public opinion. When the bullets start flying, people need to decide: liberty or tyranny.
Constitutionally speaking, the federal government has no authority to hold massive amounts of land in perpetutity.

You don’t know the difference between a District Court and a Circuit Court of Appeals. “filing an appeal with the 9th District Federal Court “. You don’t know the difference between a civil action and a criminal action.” You don’t know the difference between a trial and a sentencing hearing. You have no concept of what ‘double jeopardy” means. You don’t seem to understand how jury selection works. I doubt you have any working knowledge of the Federal Rules of Evidence or the Federal Rules of Criminal Procedure.
My research on what? Show me where to find that "the 9th District Federal Court" and maybe we can begin a dialogue. Learn what 'double jeopardy means and the difference between a trial and a hearing and maybe we can even have an intelligent dialogue. Stick with reading the mindless rants of the ignorant, and we don't really have anything to talk about.
Good. You are finally beginning to understand. Federal judges are required to follow the law, and when they violate the law in imposing a sentence, that error can be corrected.
Just to clarify, this wasn't a 'guidelines' case - a federal judge can vary from the guidelines in appropriate cases if he or she is willing to do the paperwork.
In this case, the judge was outside the statutory limits set by Congress (and if folks have a complaint, it is with Congress, not the BLM or the courts).
The sentencing guidelines narrow the band set by congress; in this case the original sentence was not only outside of the guidelines, it was outside to the statutory limits set by Congress.
The US Attorney for that district filed an appeal of the original sentences and won in court. It is too bad that US Attorneys don’t feel so strongly about the same sorts of laws regarding use of guns in a crime.
