I received a Sony DSC-W830 camera as a gift. Nice. Unfortunately it will not connect nor download pix to my PC running XP.
Can anyone help?
Thanks.
Ah. Good catch, mate. You noticed it too, I see.
It took 20 posts to get to “Buy a Mac”? Amazing.
I regularly read 32 GB SD cards on my laptop, running 32 bit XP SP3
Then, with whatever his next problem is he can go directly to the Supported Device listing and go from there. If it is supported, no worries. If not, then he has no further need to keep starting threads concerning his personal problems because he will already know that his device is not supported and there's the end of it.
I believe there is also a PC Anonymous -type of forum (like Alcoholics Anonymous) for the macusers where he can go to get further support, instead of whinging incessantly on this forum about whatever he is next confused about.
People like him are why such things as Support Service Contracts exist in the first place. FreeRepublic was not created to be anyone's unpaid Computing and Devices support staff. I am certain there is at least one professional service nearby he can pay to solve his continual computer problems.
You know Utilizer, you’re onto something. I didn’t really consider the enablement factor and I think it is time to stop. I too am not an Apple user, but believe your recommendation is right on the mark.
I was real tempted to add some “special keywords”, but nah... it’s Christmas.
Thank you for your compassionate reply.
2)Prior to taking the images, did you format the memory card in the camera? If not, it's possible that could be the problem. If these are just "test" photos and you don't mind losing them, format the card, try taking some pics and try again.
3)XP has the Scanner and Camera wizard which should detect the camera. Sometimes all-in-one printers have monitoring programs that will interfere with the camera and the PC from communicating.
4) Get a card reader.
I took a quick look, it doesn't look as though the camera shoots RAW images, so that's probably not it.
I think that's a little harsh. Just because someone is a "professional" (i.e. does it for money) doesn't make their advice correct or valuable. And many times in my experience IT "professionals" have hosed up my equipment - for a fat fee.
I for one was interested in the OP's problem and FReepers' replies.
No FR is not a PC support group, you're right about that.
I thought I was on FR a lot; but, I guess not so much as I thought because I have NO idea of who starts too many vanity threads.
However, I have started a few asking for tech help and have received good advice and help from knowledgeable and cheerful FReepers.
And I have developed the skill of ignoring threads that do not interest me - and there are a lot of those.
Thank you. You know, I really don’t mind normally helping out with someone’s computer problems but this person seems intent on taking other’s good intentions beyond the pale.
It really stood out when FReeper Tom Server pointed out how very many times he has come online to seek help for his computer problems.
Thus the recommendation.
Sorry; that should be TomServo, not Tom Server. (apologies, mate!)
Your generosity is noted. :) Hope you had a Merry Christmas.
You are welcome, and I hope you take the advice to heart. I know it would be a benefit to all concerned, including yourself.
You make a valid point. The contracts I am aware of have a section that specifically states that they will correct the problem or no fee is due. Of course, the contract also stipulates that if they cannot correct the problem they will explain why and the customer can then choose to select another course to correct it up to and including someone else or some other company.
Glad you see you found the questions and answers of interest.
Cheers.
Here is a better site for such difficulties:

Quite helpful, actually. I have contributed help there once or twice as well over the years.
And you, also.
