Anyone else spending Christmas Eve alone? (vanity)
The Amazing Yet Bizarro World of Skooz | 12/24/2015 | Skooz

Merry Christmas, fellow Freepers! Once again, it is Christmas Eve and once again, many of us find ourselves, for various reasons, alone. Many of us have circumstances that have led to a solo Christmas Eve. Mine: My marriage fell apart in 2009. Part of my agreement with my ex-wife is that she has our daughter Christmas Eve and Christmas morning and she is with me the rest of Christmas day. Not a perfect solution, but I would rather say “hello” than “goodbye” to my little girl on Christmas. That, alas, means that on the Eve of our most family-oriented of holidays I find myself here. By myself. No big deal. I’m used to it and have found I don’t mind at all. Anyone else out there flying solo this evening?

My Italian ancestry was repelled by the thought of turkey or goose for Christmas. We had an elaborate pasta dish coupled with baked chicken and an antipasto up front. Dessert was pizzelle, cannoli and various Christmas pastries with rum.

Non-Italians are culturally deprived.

My husband, myself and little dog are together. Our son and his family were in from out of state for Christmas this past weekend through Tuesday, so our Christmas is a little fragmented this year. We just opened each others gifts and nothing fits! We are grateful for each other.

I am a throwback of the Donna Reed show and anything other than a perfect Christmas has never worked, yet trying to make it work for me has never worked. So this year I am doing everything other than what Donna Reed would do, and it is working.

For those alone, bless you and understand that the images of Christmas, family, snow, jingle bells, huge table with dozens gathered around, a beautiful tree singing are just images, that so many try to emulate and rarely achieve.

Excellent selection on TV tonight. But, I cut the cable years ago. I’ve pretty much gone through my Christmas DVD collection.

Tonight, I’ll spend some quality time with “A Christmas Story” and a glass of petite sirah.

Not a bad night at all. :)

Merry Christmas Eve to you. I’ve spent Christmas alone for several years now and always enjoy the solitude and reflection on the miracle of our Lord. (All family is out of state and somewhat disconnected.) My days are spent in the junior high classroom so I truly look forward to this time. Will head out to midnight Mass soon and will say a prayer for you and all FReepers. This site keeps me well-informed and laughing...a gift to cherish:)

Not entirely alone, but almost. The only thing special is my traditional Christmas dinner of shrimp-and-crawfish gumbo. Then, I’ll spend at least an hour sitting back and listening to some old-time jazz recordings. Followed by putting in a dvd-disc and watching some beautifully creaky old B-western from the days of the early talkies. Top it off by sifting through my vintage magazine collection, and maybe listen to an old 1940s-era radio show, or some such endeavor. Anything, however fleetingly, to help me forget what a hellishly sick and perverted culture that this nation has devolved down into. I live for those moments.

I’ve always wanted to do an elaborate pasta dish on Christmas. I usually just grill steak for the wife and kids.

Watch some old videotape of old Christmases from the 90s.

Alone in my thoughts. Realizing how much time has passed, how many people are no longer here, and hoping for better days.

The "huge table" ended when my maternal grandmother died at age 89 from a heart attack. She was cooking Christmas dinner when she felt the elephant sitting on her chest. A drama queen to the end, she laid down on the floor, crossed her arms and arranged herself as though she were in her coffin. Her elderly unmarried daughter found her.

From that point on, I simply watched as her middle aged progeny died from alcoholism, pneumonia, a perforated duodenal ulcer (my mother), advanced Parkinson's, and senile dementia.

I left that whole thing when I went into the Army in 1971 and went from Philadelphia to the West Coast. I never looked back, and I don't regret it. They were always at each other's throats when they weren't at the "huge table."

The Christmas/NewYears school break us fairly long.

Consider revising to split the break in 1/2 and Alternating the front/back half.

This schedule allows for longer plans to be made.
