Bedfordâs Editor Note: This is pretty on-point, and will spoil âThe Force Awakensâ a lot if you havenât seen it, and even a bit if you have. So thanks for that, Blake.
After years of staggering hype, âStar Wars: The Force Awakensâ opened to nearly-unanimous positive reviews and the biggest opening of any film ever. Dozens of laudatory reviews are praising it as a worthy successor to the Original Trilogy.

I grew up in the Star Wars era, have never seen a single one of them.
BRUCE! the shark from Jaws!
I thought that he had been damaged and was discarded.
How old is that picture, anyway?
That is Steven Spielberg that Jaws is having for lunch.
The moviemakers aren’t seeking our dollars. They are seeking the dollars of the younger demographics.
J.J. Abrams blew up the planet Vulcan in Star Trek. If he does another Star Trek movie he will blow up Earth.
No kidding? Cool! Thanks!
Actually they’re seeking ALL the dollars. The generation that made this the most lucrative franchise on the planet is now in their 40s to 60s, they’ve got money, they’ve shown a fondness for not moving past their childhood obsessions, and they spent 1 BILLION dollars on merch for a movie that wasn’t even out yet in 24 hours. Kids are nice dollars, but kids don’t actually have their own dollars, in the end adults still need to spend the money, either for themselves or for their kids. Of course they want the kids hooked because Disney is still going to own this in 20 years and they’re still going to want dollars.
I really, really, REALLY cannot abide anything that Abrams does, especially because he so relishes destroying decades of storytelling in movies people have come to love.
Well, Han can’t come back as a Force ghost...he is not Force sensitive.
He might be. That’s a subject of great discussion in fen. We’ll find out in a year and a half which way it bounces in current canon.
Fen...heh...ever go to Media West?
No. I’m strictly unprofessional.
This review is generally accurate. I would add its basically episode 4 redux.
See post 28.
I haven’t seen the movie yet so I want to avoid spoilers. But if one of the things “wrong” with it is manual weapons targeting, I’m with you.
Yeah. :)
Only this time with a chick playing the "Luke Skywalker" role. Do we have to have female heroines in EVERY movie now?
We just saw this. Entertaining, but this guy’s observations are pretty spot on. This is a sort of juvenile rehash using tropes from Jar Jar Abrams’ Star Trek reboot: Untrained barely disciplined handsome guy gets made Captain of a Starship upon graduation from the Academy. Same here except they use a chick and make it even more unbelievable.
