What happened to the silly Christmas songs?

Posted on 12/17/2015 5:50:31 PM PST by rey

We have three radio stations in our are that play Christmas songs all day and another three that play one about every third song. What is interestingly absent are the silly songs like:

I want a hippopotamus for Christmas: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Dec9Jb_Ac4

Dear Santa (a personal favorite, the kid from Yemen wanting a grenade launcher is great): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2jtd3GR38wo

Or you ain't gettin diddly squat cause you really messed up this year (not that I like it, but it annoys my grand daughter): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZoINm3ZWlAE

along with All I want for Christmas is my two front teeth, All the chipmunk songs, Grandma got run over (thank goodness), basically anything silly.

They also do not play anything overly religious. I have called and all they say is they don't play those.

Anyone know what's up?

By the way, I'd be happy NOT to hear any John Lennon Christmas songs, Wham or George Michael Christmas songs, Mannheim Steam Roller songs, Maddona Christmas songs, and any collaboration of pop musicians lecturing us about the world via some crappy Christmas song.

Whenever scallions come up in conversation I’ll say, “Most people call them green onions, but they are really scallions”... and nobody ever “gets it” anymore.

Those Chipmunks did a record 10 years later with Canned Heat in 1968

My personal favourite is Santa Baby performed by Pink Martini,

In the 80's Orlando radio station WDBO would air a Christmas Eve afternoon program of these types of Christmas songs.

My favorite remains...

The Restroom Door Said Gentlemen

So This Is Christmas”

That is without a doubt the most OPPRESSIVE “Christmas” song I have ever “experienced”.

how many times can one HEAR “war is over if you want it” sung by yoko ono and live??

Yes, I still have my copy of GREEN CHRISTMAS and CHRISTMAS DRAGNET. Unfortunately, no one today gets the references. You have to have lived through that era to get them.

Your post just reminded me of something. We were down in MD, last year or the year before and it was 6/25 and one of the local radio stations was playing all Christmas songs, like a half-year Christmas. I heard one, it might have been that Bruce Springsteen Santa Claus is coming to town, or something and I thought, well, OK they are just playing that song because it is pretty good. But then there was another and another and I was like: what is going on?

Finally the DJ came on and clued me in.

My little brother would have loved that when he was a kid, it was hard for him to wait a whole year for next Christmas.

There must be trends in even the old stuff. A song i keep hearing this year is....

I've Got My Love To Keep Me Warm , written by Irving Berlin. Performed by Rosemary Clooney or Kay Starr .

I have heard this only occasionally, but on our FM Christmas station its played every day.

I was born 8 years after the final Jack Webb Dragnet episode aired. But I'm an anomaly. :)
