What happened to the silly Christmas songs?

Posted on 12/17/2015 5:50:31 PM PST by rey

We have three radio stations in our are that play Christmas songs all day and another three that play one about every third song. What is interestingly absent are the silly songs like:

I want a hippopotamus for Christmas: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Dec9Jb_Ac4

Dear Santa (a personal favorite, the kid from Yemen wanting a grenade launcher is great): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2jtd3GR38wo

Or you ain't gettin diddly squat cause you really messed up this year (not that I like it, but it annoys my grand daughter): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZoINm3ZWlAE

along with All I want for Christmas is my two front teeth, All the chipmunk songs, Grandma got run over (thank goodness), basically anything silly.

They also do not play anything overly religious. I have called and all they say is they don't play those.

Anyone know what's up?

By the way, I'd be happy NOT to hear any John Lennon Christmas songs, Wham or George Michael Christmas songs, Mannheim Steam Roller songs, Maddona Christmas songs, and any collaboration of pop musicians lecturing us about the world via some crappy Christmas song.

It is a shame he is gone (RIP Glenn Mitchell), but we used to have a guy here in Dallas (NPR station, and he was a lib) who did a 6-hour show of silly Christmas songs every year. It was something I looked forward to every year.

Santa I want a goat for Christmas

I guess you had to be there :)

Search YouTube for "Dr Demento Christmas" and it will yield hours of good results. Sample here. for part of his 1976 Christmas show. I actually listened to this show that year as well as other years during that era.

I mean like... yeah I know Lennon is being the peacenik. But the right kind of war, a gospel war, will soon do a lot to bring a paradoxical peace. Trouble is, it needs a godly mindset to carry it out and that can take a lifetime in the school of hard knocks to learn.

What we hate is sometimes very close to something we should very dearly love. It’s easy to say sanctimony, not so easy to bring sanctification, if you get my drift.

I don’t like the silly ones, but I do love Mariah Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas Is You.”

One of my favorites from the 80’s; Run DMC’s “Christmastime in Hollis”. This song also is heard in another 80’s Classic, “Die Hard”.

I agree. The stuff on the radio is horrid. I heard some woman warbling O Holy Night the other day and listening to the words couldn’t figure out what made the night holy. They had removed all references to Christ and she basically just kept repeating “O holy night” and “O night divine” as she demonstrated the broad range of her voice. I was left wondering “what was the point of that song?”

Frankly, both of those songs are in major keys, the former in G major and the latter in C major. But they are not short on sanctimony indeed. (Even worse, the word “sanctimony” means the opposite today of its original meaning.)

The only Christmas-themed song by AC/DC that I recall is “Mistress for Christmas”.
