Black Quarterbacks Are Benched Twice As Often As Whites, Study Finds
Pacific Standard Magazine ^ | Nov 10, 2015 | Tom Jacobs

"Black people aren't allowed to make mistakes," musician Prince declared last year, in a statement that spoke for many. Screw up once, the thinking goes, and you're out, having confirmed the view of many whites that you didn't deserve a shot in the first place.

New research provides evidence of that destructive dynamic on one of America's largest stages: the National Football League.

A new study concludes that, after a sub-par performance, black NFL quarterbacks are roughly twice as likely to be benched the following week than their white colleagues. After taking a series of variables into account (including age, experience, and injury), Assumption College economist Brian Volz found a pattern of player replacement that suggests systematic racial discrimination. He also reports that, in terms of on-field performance, teams pay a price for this behavior. Writing in the Journal of Sports Economics, Volz begins by noting that, over the last 13 seasons, the percentage of African-American starting quarterbacks ranged from 16 to 28 percent—startlingly low numbers, considering that about two-thirds of NFL players are black.

To determine whether this reflects racial discrimination, he analyzed data from 2001 to 2009, looking specifically at quarterbacks who started the first game of the season. (He reasoned that those whose first game as a starter come later in the season may simply be replacing an injured or otherwise indisposed player.)

He then took into account a number of non-racial factors that could influence a quarterback being benched, including his age, experience, and performance; the quality of the second-string quarterback who replaced him; and of course any injuries he had sustained. In addition, he looked at the percentage of black residents in a team's metropolitan area, to see if the racial make-up of the fan base had an impact on the decision.

Because racism? I don’t see their point. Ifthere are twice as many black quarterbacks as whites that might be a reason. Some people are always looking to be offended.

Oh? Is he finally admitting that telling Warner Bros. to f*** off was a mistake?

Okay, what do the numbers look like if you filter out Tavaris Jackson and Daunte Culpepper?

My thoughts. And while we’re at it, the NBA as well and all college sports.

So his real name is Prince? Never knew that and never understood why he was so popular. He’s a tiny man with a tiny voice. Meh.

Let’s talk about the real racism in the NFL. Tell it to Tebow who was benched after winning a playoff game. Black QBs have been artificially pushed by the NFL since Michael Vick. White cornerbacks have been purged from the NFL. White safeties aren’t far behind. White running backs are miracles if they ake it to the NFL....no matter how many records they break in college. Then they are immediately sent to 4th string apprenticeships until all black running backs are injured. God forbid they have one bad game behind a bad offensive line and the experiment is over. Jordy Nelson - arguably the best wide out in the NFL was - like almost every white wide receiver had to be a walk-on in college since college sports have become a way for the colleges to meet their racial quotas. Cam Newton is praised as the second coming even though he is bottom half in QB rating as well as yards.

Reminds me of one of my favorite books - “How To Lie with Statistics” by Darrell Huff.

This is ridiculous. Someone actually tracks this stuff?? Maybe its because right now there just aren’t that many good black NFL quarterbacks. Newton and Wilson are the only top tier black QBs i can think of. Winston is good, but not there yet. Mediocre QBs get benched more, and most black QBs are mediocre. There. Study refuted.

Yes, and black NFL cornerbacks are 100% more likely to commit pass interference than white cornerbacks. Why? Because there aren’t any white cornerbacks in the NFL. The NFL is a huge money enterprise that is first about winning and about following formulas that they think lead to winning, because they play for money. All this implied racism is crap and it minimizes the accomplishments of guys like Cam Newton and Russell Wilson.

Are you willing to bet there is not even one white guy in the entire country who is qualified to be an NFL cornerback? I wouldn’t, but nobody running an NFL team seems to be willing to find out.

Steelers had one of the early black quarterbacks - Joe Gilliam.

He had a great arm but no sense.

He tried to throw the ball on every play when he had great running backs.

Anyhow, he didn’t last long and ended up on drugs.

Nobody was shocked.

He may be a flake, and he may be tiny, but he doesn’t have a small voice. Prince is nutty as a fruitcake, but an incredible musician. His Super Bowl halftime show was arguably the best ever.

“Cam Newton is black.”

And he would be a jackass all the same if he were purple, green or white!

So, SO tired of this, ‘what color is your skin’ crap. You are a good person or not. You contribute to society as a whole, or you do not.

Do blacks think being labeled, ‘white trash’ is a Good Thing? LOL!

Last night I reminded her that there used to be a “colored” baseball league. Today we have a black football league. There are very few whites starting in the NFL.

Uhh.... have you checked the papers? The Panthers are undefeated. And you’re going to dis Cam Newton?

And as for Tim Tebow, give it up. Multiple teams have given him a shot, and he just doesn’t have what it takes to be an NFL quarterback.

The NFL is a meritocracy. The coach doesn’t give a damn what color you are. How about RG III? Seen him lately? Nope, riding the bench. Michael Sam, gay hero? Cut. Wasn’t good enough. The NFL is a meritocracy. Period.
