There have been a few people who moved here from the city and apparently thought the area was a giant dog park where pets could be turned loose to wander around as they liked. It never ended well-if their dog or cat didn’t become dinner for coyotes or a snack for a mountain lion, their dog would end up getting shot by a neighbor for running their livestock, or if it survived that, the owner got slapped with the county fine for an unleashed dog-first offense is $500. Most of those people move away within a year or two...
The coyotes here aren’t beautiful, they look like scruffy, malnourished, muddy mixed breed dogs until you notice that they don’t move like dogs at all, more like a large fox.
It’s a miracle the coyote didn’t take the baby.
The dogs could not have stopped it.
Damn things should be shot site..exterminated.
Sounds like those dogs barked 23/7.
((
IOW, chihuahas.
Yeah, these people sound like morons.
Possibly the ones here are well-fed on feral cats.
And yes, they do move like large foxes.
And what would be the natural habitat for humans? We're infringing? Sorry, that's an incorrect assumption...we humans have always "infringed" on areas where wild critters live since the dawn of man.
That's because we humans live wherever we want. In short, we are not infringing, we are taking over. The critters will have to like it or lump it.
That does not mean we don't have to be careful and respect other critters in the area. But they don't own that area... if we want to live there, we own it.
Isn’t “chihuahua” mexican for 4th and long?
You need a rabbit distress call. The coyotes respond quite well to those. Bring ‘em in to your property and when they’re in range, pop ‘em.
The point was, the Coyotes were there before the House was built. Laguna has mandated the Canyon adjacent to the City become a Nature Preserve, and there you have it, Coyote Heaven.
My response was to the Lagunatic Homeowner who is Clueless and put his Pets at risk.
He wanted something done to the Coyotes, humanely catching them alive and relocating them. Never a though of shooting the Vermin that ate his Dog. (No, I don’t mean Obama)
That would be “quarto” and “largo”-those small constantly barking dogs are named for the state of Chihuahua in the north of Mexico-it is supposedly where they were first imported from...
We still get squirrels. We're closer to the west side of the peninsula, just east of the hills separating us from Pacifica. Lots of wildlife move north/south on those hills from wildlife areas (Crystal Springs). Lot of roadkill during the night on streets. Lately been having black squirrels in our trees. Racoons, skunks and possums frequent our back yard. Cyclone fences that they dig a path under to go between most yards, which we don't mind because they're entertainment; big trees for squirrels to travel yard to yard. I don't mind most except for when racoons and skunks challenge each other, don't like the smell when skunks let loose. One time I was in the back yard and a pack of skunks came from behind, circling me inches away. This was middle of the day. They show no fear, although I did! My poor neighbor's golden retriever got squirted a couple times (same one attacked by a hawk). Better the dog got it than me. Our grandchildren are never unattended while in the back yard. Got scary last couple years with word of a wolf in the neighborhood (when most of the cats disappeared).
Cats and small dogs are delicacies to coyotes.
The packs don’t stay in one location here. When they start
moving upriver; there is no mistaking what they are. I’ve
heard them almost squealing some nights, and it is generally
a bunch of them travelling together. The babies just fairly
scream, the adults just howl. Sometimes they get our
Malamute started howling in answer to them. I guess Dub’s
warning them that this is her place. No doubt; they speak
the same language.
People are in danger when around coyotes. Waving your arms, stomping your feet or holding your breath until you turn blue will not help. Coyotes learn quickly.
I had an experience w a pack once. Still can’t believe that they knew what I was doing when I picked up some rocks. Must have had contact w humans before.
Beautiful winter coats. Wonder if you could make a coat or jacket out of the fur.
You should carry a pistol and a serious knife, as well as a nice wizard’s staff.
> We have a 14LB Chihuahua and she is no match for anything except the cat next door whose butt she regularly beats.
Don’t underestimate cats. My mom’s 8 pound female cat was chased and cornered by a 3 year old Doberman Pinscher. The cat killed it.
Yes, you are right. I have it and should be carrying it. I would say the coyotes are pretty unpredictable. The second encounter with the coyote, the varmit did not act vicious at all. Kind of a kindred dog thing with the lab, but I don't trust them at all.
I have to keep something in my hands to keep the lab from pestering me for treats or else he won't run around and get his exercise for begging. He is a real con man, but very affectionate when it is time to be put up for the night.
