Coyote enters Laguna Beach home and snatches pet Chihuahua, owners say
L A Times ^ | Jeremiah Dobruck

John Fischer, who lives in the 500 block of Oak Street with his wife, said the couple's three Chihuahuas started barking about 7:45 p.m.

Fischer, who was in the kitchen, didn't think much of the noise. The dogs were in the bedroom with his week-old granddaughter, and he assumed they were reacting to a visitor they were expecting.

But as he left the kitchen, Fischer glimpsed something running out of the bedroom and into the yard. It was a coyote, and it was carrying something.

...

Fischer had enough time to see the animal had seized Eloise, an 8-year-old Chihuahua.

"The dog was screaming," he said. "It was awful."

If you tried for 50 years and tens of thousands of dollars to chase after that d*mn skinny bird for a meal, you would take what you could get too!

I have seen coyotes roaming in my neighborhood in the daylight and I must say it bothers me.

Unfortunately I have not seen them on my property where I can take a shot at them.

Not quite true. My wife did spot one in the yard but by the time I had picked up my rifle it was gone.

One of my Jack Russell’s is small and only weighs about 15 pounds. We have coyotes in our part of central Houston. My neighbor has seen one in my wooded back yard. This could happen here.

It isn’t going to happen in my house however!

Here's an excellent, pragmatic view of coyotes by Jim Schmidt, a retired U.S. Department of Agriculture coyote expert with 55 years experience working with the animals. I would have expected him to be a goo-goo eyed pro-animal liberal, but he's a no-nonsense pragmatic guy. These animals ought to be exterminated anywhere close to where people live. We've had lots of cats and dogs in our town eaten by coyotes.

The Truth About Coyotes

I have lived in a remote area near the Grand Canyon surrounded by coyotes for more than 210 days at a time. I began my work with coyotes in Kansas in the 1960s and have been in Texas, Colorado, New York, South Carolina, Nevada, New Mexico and other areas with coyotes. I have kept live coyotes on my property for the USDA to observe and do urine collection for several years. I have taken biological samples from coyotes for the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and much more. I know coyotes.

Coyotes are a dangerous and very resourceful predator. They do not belong in your neighborhood, around your schools or near your children or grandchildren in any way. They kill and eat everything, including horses, calves, fawns and small animals. They have killed two humans, including a 3-year-old girl, in California. They belong in the rural areas and are moving into your neighborhoods because the anti-hunters want all sport hunting and lethal control of coyotes stopped.

You cannot live in harmony with coyotes. They must be controlled and removed from neighborhoods. They are dangerous. Look up the Biting Coyote of Green Valley, Ariz., and you'll learn that a single coyote bit eight people totally unprovoked. You will see my name mentioned, as I was the one who removed this dangerous coyote.

People are in danger when around coyotes. Waving your arms, stomping your feet or holding your breath until you turn blue will not help. Coyotes learn quickly.

I promise you that these coyotes need to be removed or you will just get more and more. The anti-hunting contingent will tell you that you must hide in your own neighborhood, in your own backyard, that your children and grandchildren must stay inside in order to live in harmony with coyotes. Are you really going to put up with that? There's a recent picture of a coyote on the roof of a building in downtown New York City. Do you really think that coyotes are going to stop coming, to limit when they go and what they kill and eat?

What an awful death for a pet!

I am sure it happens more often than people realize.

Lost pets are coyote food more often than pet owners are willing to guess.

You are wise to watch over your pets closely.

My mother n law lives near there - alot of coyotes in the hill/canyon areas. You can hear them at night so not a shock that this happened. Scary that a baby could’ve been snatched too!
Another article says he usually closes up at night because coyotes have been spotted roaming the streets but forgot to that night.

anti-hunters want all sport hunting and lethal control of coyotes stopped.

About 5 years ago the new Ohio game warden for our area came to speak at our gun club. I asked about killing coyotes. He told me there was no season for coyotes (considered a varmint and can be shot anytime).

I have not checked lately but assume it is still true.

Get one of those “rabbit in distress” predator calls and you’ll lure Mr. Coyote into the crosshairs quickly enough.

Out here in NW Pennsylvania, we don't seem to have this problem of Coyotes entering our homes and snatching our little yipyip dogs:

4 Coyotes Killed on One Stand with MFK Game Calls
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7YhxqRWCncA

These guys, MFK Game Calls (www.mfkgamecalls.com) created a line of coyote calls (and a couple of others) that seem pretty effective in calling in coyotes.

They sound very authenticate.

Interestingly, you can exchange the word “coyotes” in that for the word “muslims” and it still is mostly valid.

It’s sad but5 when you live in an area inhabited by Coyotes you can’t let your guard down, especially if you have small children. Coyotes have become fearless of man and have been very successful in populating urban areas and their ready supply of food, including what we consider pets. It wasn’t that long ago that a Coyote snatched a small child at a cemetery in Cypress,CA. and tried to drag it into the bushes for lunch.

I had a red tail hawk take a rabbit not more than 50 feet away from me once. The sound it makes is hard to describe and not pleasant.

Rather shocked me that the bird did it that close to humans. They are usually a bit more shy.

Given the time of year I am guessing it was a young hawk and hungry.

"Did Eloise come home safely?"

Here in California (near San Jose), it isn’t just coyotes eating pets. In yesterday’s Mercury News, Tammy P asked about a cat killed in her neighborhood. Joan Morris answered...

If the cat was killed at night, it was likely attacked by a great horned owl or a coyote. If it happened during the day, it was most likely a red-tailed hawk.

Great horned owls are great hunters. Unfortunately, one of the things they hunt are cats.

I’m inclined to go with a raptor because it would appear the culprit went after the heart and lungs. A coyote might not be as precise and would eat more of the animal, unless it was frightened away.

This is a good reminder that even though a cat is smart enough to avoid cars and knows to stay out of backyards with big dogs, they still are considered prey by the wild animals that share our space.
