5 Ways to Survive Thanksgiving Dinner Sitting Across From Your Sanctimonious Left-Wing Relatives

Anti-Socialism Plan When your twenty-year-old nephew emerges from his safe space and wants to start talking about the benefits of socialism and Bernie Sanders, immediately take his plate and redistribute his food to the dogs. Leave him with the green bean casserole and half a roll. If he complains, tell him he had an overprivileged plate and he's a greedy bastard for not wanting to share with the less fortunate animals in the house who don't have thumbs or the ability to work to buy their own turkey. Be prepared to use the safe space again.

Too funny. I've got a passel of liberal-minded relatives to contend with on the holidays and they are so easy to shoot down. For instance, one of them was going on about how Donald Trump's tweet the other day about black on black murders was completely discredited. So I asked her what the percentage of murders was that was black on black. She had no answer for me except to maintain that Trump's statistics were wrong and so that made him a racist. I told her to get back to me when she could tell me the actual stats and back them up to a valid source.

It's also telling that even though I'm the "black sheep" conservative in the family, I'm always the one hosting the holidays because I have the nicest house, stocked with copious amounts of fine food and drink. Certainly they are not going to be able to host anything in their ratty apartments. Not that I mind hosting but just goes to show you that for all the protesting and lecturing that the "Occupy" generation does about "white privilege", in the end, they always end up coming home to their older relatives in their suburban paradise.

I also got a kick out of that Democrat Party talking points website for that "Republican uncle" at the dinner table (I guess that would be me!) . It was so lame.

For instance, they have a talking point for a Republican uncle who would purportedly say "Gee, that Jeb Bush knows what's good for the economy."

Hell, if that gets said at my table, even I'm getting up and leaving!

We solved that problem, we have dinner in Kentucky and the sanctimonious left wing relatives have theirs in Arizona. Works great!!!

On major holidays, all households must be a dictatorship. Otherwise chaos reins. It must, of course, be a benevolent dictatorship - but no politics or spouting stupid atheistic stuff like “Do you really believe in a man in the sky?” Atheists say the stupidest stuff.

I’ve been to a few Turkey Days when some of the left-wing visitors started yapping about evil Republicans. I used to argue, but now I just keep my mouth shut. In my experience it’s far more likely those of the leftist persuasion will try to start something.

When did it become a thing for people to show up at these and start arguments?

In my many decades of being at these events, a number of them have people heavily imbibing strong drink hours before the meal. This has a habit of some people loosening their tongues and spouting off.

But many libs just can't help themselves....strong drink or no strong drink, they want to start something.

The truth is, no one wants to talk about politics on Thanksgiving. The myth that most family holidays are insufferable is foisted on us by the bitter Left.

That is true. When that www.yourrepublicanuncle.com story broke, I got angry. Then I went to a Democrat web page dedicated to it, and most of THEM found it offensive.

I wish my aunts and uncles were still around. The last thing I'd ever do is try to argue with them.

I don’t shy away from getting in to it with family, friends, or foes, even at Thanksgiving if they dare bring up politics. Once you point out today’s big government tax & spend statist liberalism has been one huge failure with the massive trillions in debt that has come with it (and remind them 0bama will own about half of that failure when he leaves office).

I also tell them if today’s liberalism was such a good thing, we wouldn’t have this massive debt that threatens to destroy this once great nation if we continue to go down this path. I just usually end up getting that blank stare from them or they drop the conversation in a hurry, lol.

Today’s liberalism/progressivism has been one huge failure and I’m not afraid to tell them that and why.

...but my home and table are a testament to my faith and values.

Amazing what happens when you call for prayer before dinner. Then talk about what the church is doing with missions.

Oh, and I should have added that none of us should be afraid to point out to leftists how their agenda has failed America and encourage all those who understand this to point this out anytime they get the chance.

After all, what the left has brought America the last century or so has been a big lie and evil disguised as good. We need to fight that evil head on as many of us understand, the enemy of the big lie is the truth.

Wow, a lot of you guys in the first posts are just responding with joke hatred and violence. I am always surrounded by libs at big family events. If some political difference comes up, I enjoy meeting them in the true exchange of ideas, because in truth, conservativism always wins. I don’t ever fight or argue with my family and friends, but I gently talk about freedom. It’s what I would die for, along with of course my children. I believe in it, and even though the names don’t match up, it’s why I’m a conservative. I can also say that I love the constitution.

That usually gets a discussion going with a few, others will assume I am crazy because of course liberals are more free because they love pot and transgender. Bye, who wants to talk to superficials like that anyway. The ones that are interested are usually the libertarians, and we can talk and agree on many points, and if they get to the few where I disagree (like foreign affairs), I tell them why, and it’s at least interesting, and they get where I am coming from.

Now, new this year, I am finally smart enough to also tell them I hate republicans in DC as much as democrats, that to me they are part of the same oligarchy, owned by interests that are entirely separate from those of the People they are sworn to represent.

You may end up closer to people, and they might understand you better, if you try my way. I’d rather have people understand where I’m coming from than just think of me as a right wing freak.

But not many have open enough minds.

So conservatives are supposed to not only shut up in public but be subjected to talking points in private ... so much for equal time.

The “don’t proselytize!” many liberals have with regard to religion isn’t applied to their own belief system.
So them sharing their message is OK to them, but you sharing yours is somehow wrong.

Since retirement 5 years ago, my wife and I spend our Thanksgivings by ourselves on the farm. Friends here have their family get-togethers and our relatives live 2,000 miles away. We don't even cook a special meal. The day is like any other with chores and projects to attend to around the homestead.

But when we lived in Arizona before retiring, everyone in the family came to our home for the day. Kids, grandkids, grandparents, aunts and uncles all would show up. We believe Thanksgiving is a day to gives thanks to our Lord for his blessings, not to complain about what you don't have or to argue about what is wrong in your life. So even though we only had a couple of liberal types in the entire group, no one dared argue politics or religion at the function. It wasn't appropriate. Everyone was civil and friendly and we always enjoyed a good time by setting tone and the basic ground rule that it was a day to give thanks for our blessings.

I'd rather have people understand where I'm coming from than just think of me as a right wing freak.

But not many have open enough minds.

I understand where you are coming from but Americans have played nice with the left for at least the last half century but yet the left continues its march towards, unknowingly (or those few that know what evil they are doing), destroying this country.

You've kind of answered your previous sentence as the leftists are some of the most close minded individuals out there and no matter what you tell them, they will always see you as a right wing freak. Trust me, I've battled tons of them online, the only thing that makes them stop and think is pointing out the left's failures in this country as I stated above.

Even that they try to ignore or deflect to republicans are responsible for this massive debt too. And I anwer yes, there have been plenty of tax and spend leftist republicans in office as well but I remind them it is the left that owns the tax and spend big goverment mentality in this country that has this country in such a mess.

Then I explain how Constitutional conservatives are not responsible for this because we support the Constitution and it's limits on government and power that ensures the most freedom with the least amount of government. I also explain that Constitutional conservatives have been bastardized by the left to mean something it is not but that's so they don't see it for themselves.

The time for playing nice with these leftists are over if we are going to even have a chance to save this country. Pointing out the left's failures is a good start because no one wants to believe in something that has already failed and point out why it has already failed (the massive debt we have that threatens this country and future generations). It really is an easy argument to win these days with how the it has all played out and really, remind them if liberalism/progressivism is so good for this country, then why do we have a massive debt, as a result, that threatens to destroy this country at some point.
