Supercars are built to represent the pinnacle of automotive technology. Brutally fast and impossibly expensive, they are objects of desire and the stuff dreams are made of. But thereâs more to a supercar than just speed and good looks. Thereâs a certain hierarchy in the supercar world â a select group of car builders that seem to control the collective memory when it comes to performance. Ferraris, Lamborghinis, and McLarens build supercars, unquestionably. Acura, Aston Martin, and Jaguar? Maybe not. Despite looks, speed, and handling to compete with the best, some plenty capable dream machines just get left behind.
And thatâs a real shame. For every legendary Porsche 959 or Bugatti Veyron there are several woefully underrated cars that deserve to be part of the âbest everâ conversation.

I always liked the Detomaso Pantera.
The BMW 8 series is rumored to be in development for revival, possibly as a 9.
Out of my bracket, but I’d love to take a spin.
The only one I’ve ever driven was the Pantera. I had a neighbor who got himself into the auto import business (in a small way) and he took delivery of of several automobiles one sunny summer day.
He needed to transport them to his showroom and invited me to drive the Pantera (I was hoping to drive one of the Ferrari’s but that wasn’t gonna happen). I even got paid $25 - not bad work for a 19 year old kid!
Ever since I discovered the Pantera around 10 years old, it’s been on my list. I will have one before I die, it’s going to happen. It’s been an obsession I can’t shake
Don’t forget STUDEBAKERS!!!
This one should be on the list, this is the predecessor to the Bugatti Veryon
I like the twin-turbo V6 Jag, though it’s a shame they didn’t make the V12 as originally conceived. Was out of my price range when new, and remains so now, LOL.
My # ! has always been:

I also like the Detomaso Mangusta

Panteras are pretty hot right now in the collector car market.
“I also like the Detomaso Mangusta”
I was in the USArmy in Germany back then, and I went to every auto show I could find.
I got a poster of a yellow DeTomaso Mangusta.
Then and now, I think it is one of the best looking cars of all time.

Note the connection to Shelby? Those years turned out the original Cobra, the original Fort GT (which won at Le Mans) etc.
I was given a tour of the Vector factory when it was in Harbor City back in the day.
They might need to update the lines a bit.
My boys and I were just looking at my old matchbox cars a few minutes ago. One is a DeTomaso Pantera.
