The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks.
No matter what, you won't be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn't asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table(recipes)preserving, good living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!
NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.
Taking a well - needed break to post the thread is a welcome respite from the tedium of reading two reams of policies and procedures. I'll be taking off shortly to run some errands, so at least I'll get some fresh air while downtown.
After Thanksgiving, I'll be ringing the bell for the Salvation Army, so I'm praying for another day like today - then! LOL
Nothing new on the gardening front, due to the aforementioned activities, and cleaning up for Thanksgiving. Hope everyone is doing well. Prayers up for everyone. Have a great weekend. God Bless.
Pinging the list. Happy Turkey day everyone - I will be pinging on Black Friday, in case anyone else wants to stay home and avoid the crowds.
We have a caterpillar somewhere in my grouping of plants. :(
Need to put another deer in the cooler this weekend, replace the broken window panes on the cold frame, retrieve a load of firewood from the sawmill, and a dozen other things that won't all get done. lol
I got the garden mostly cleaned up last weekend. I need to pick the last of the green beans and tear out two rows of tomato plants to be finished for the year. Salad, kale and beets are still going strong.
All the rain filled the pond up to the cut in the dam. It was getting really hard to dig so a little water at this point in time isn't all bad. I tossed the trash pump in after work yesterday. Will be interesting to see how long it takes to empty it back out.
Seriously, it's a fun, easy and satisfying thing to do.
P.S.: The smell that emanates from my drying room is overwhelming. You don't get this from cheap/old saffron.
We’re on a long visit with family out west, but they’re getting a fairly major blizzard back home in NW Iowa today. Not surprised it got cold on you. Looks like the temps at home are going to be as low as 9 degrees tomorrow.
YUK. Find it and use the snipers on it. LOL
I didn’t get to plant my Earthboxes this year (had bought 2 more, for a total of 6), but I have enjoyed reading the threads.
Next year, we may be in the middle of a house move in the spring. So I may not get to plant until the fall season.
Make sure you exclude mice from your saffron bulb storage.
Ask me how I know that.
I keep looking for it, but I can’t find it. It’s eating my jalapeno plant, of all things.
Great pics!
I am still eating swiss chard from the garden here in Massachusetts. That’s all I can report back positive today.
Well, the amount is so small and I’m putting them directly into a small glass jar after a week of drying.
But, please! Tell me! Do mice like saffron?
Thanks for the pictures. Nice group of fall veggies.
We also had a lot of rain - not sure how many inches, but our swimming pool which was almost empty is now almost running over. (Guttering diverts the roof water into it).
I haven’t heard the forecast this week - I’ll have to check it later - might need to cover up my garlic.

That’s great. It’s something I keep meaning to do, but never get around to. Sounds like it might take up a lot of room though.
BRRRR. Pray for a warming trend/Indian Summer for the Thanksgiving Holiday shopping - I hate cold weather and I sure don’t want to freeze while I’m ringing the bell.
9 degrees ?
That’s why we took our Yankee money and moved south.
November/December is a good time to reflect on what worked in the garden and what we had too much of.
Not quite so many cherry tomatoes in 2016.
I’d like to try B. sprouts but they were overwhelmed with bugs in 2014 so we skipped this year.
Better later than never!
Not at all. Crocus bulbs are very small and can be planted in bunches. Some will simply not come to the surface. I have fifty but it looks like twenty. I’ll go for 100 next year and not only do I not have a lot of room, I have heavy clay that makes a brick look soft.
