Subaru for the best AWD for the price (any if their vehicles), and mileage is okay.

Mazda CX-5 AWD for efficiency using gas (but AWD not quite as good as Subaru).

VW diesel AWD or Audi AWD for the best of the higher-end AWDs. Diesel Audi or VW can do incredibly well on mileage while having a solid mechanism for AWD.

I love my Subie but they made me sign a paper declaring I was a lesbian before they let me buy it. Kidding aside, up here in snow country Subaru fills the parking lots. Good resale value, dependable as all git out, and with the right tires and a little caution just about unstoppable.

I have an older all wheel drive Ford Explorer. It has been a great car but gas mileage sucks. But, I just want to mention if you need a new tire or two on an all wheel drive, you will have to buy four tires regardless of the condition of the good tires. With a 4 wheel drive, this is not necessary. At least, this is what I have been told.

My wife has beat the snot out of her 2004 RAV 4 and other than a rear spring that broke and new brakes/tyres, I can’t remember spending any money on it. Oh... a year ago I put a new battery in it... imagine that, a battery that lasted over 10 years.

If your concern is ice or snow, get the best winter tires you can afford. Consumer Reports two months ago found that their best winter tires stopped cars in up to half the distance of standard tires, while helping on cornering. This was true for non-AWD cars.

AWD does nothing to help with stopping.

I really liked my Ford Escape AWD, I bought it used and former owner didn’t get the recall fixed. I didn’t learn about the recall till after it caught fire and burnt. Other than that it was really good. Great ratings too by consumer reports. But it is import to get the fuel line fixed.

2016 Hyundai Tucson would be my choice. Loaded with features and reasonably priced. Available are features like lane departure warning, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, HID headlights, 8 inch nav display and a lot more. Hyundai also has some of the best steering wheel controls around. And if you keep your vehicle a long time, the 10 year 100,000 mile powertrain warranty can't be beat. I have a 2015 Hyundai Sonanta and I absolutely love it. Hyundai is now near the top in terms of quality and owner satisfaction.

I had it on a 2002 WRX that I hotrodded a bit, but have to say I never needed it that I know of, but then, with the power it put down, could have been scary in rain a few times..............

From all I have read, Subaru is the most advances true AWD, as opposed to 4WD.

My wife had a very bad freeway experience with her 4Runner and hydroplaning ending in sideswiping the median barrier.

I convinced her that AWD was the best thing to get her over her fear of driving in the rain after that. It was becoming pathological.

Got her a 2014 Forester and I have heard nothing about rain since then.

I have a 2003 Subaru Forester and live in the hills outside of Pittsburgh. Our driveway is 330 feet strait up (most people would call it a mountain).

During the winter months we put on studded snow tires (separate rims).

I have no complaints. I expect to get another 100K miles out of it and fallow the maintenance schedule. At 100k I replaced the struts as a result of wear and tear in Western PA.

A couple of caveats now. There is substantially more road noise (especially with the studs) than other vehicles. AWD is not the best for mileage performance. Finally, many of the new cars have electronic parking breaks. Our mechanic thinks Subaru will reverse this and go back to the hand break. The hand break can be used like a boat anchor when going down very steep and slick hills. It allows you to inch down without losing steering. That is an important consideration if you are driving in very hilly terrain.

Finally, according to other Freepers I must be a lesbian. I admit it. I love women. I've been married to a very fine women going on 29 years.

P.S. Foresters retain their value. It is very hard to snag a used Forester deal.

Just remember that any driving in bad conditions requiers attention Zillion wheel drive will not let you drive like normal in icey or snowy conditions.
