Pope stumbles in church for second time in three days

ROME (Reuters) - Pope Francis had to be helped up the steps to an altar at a Rome basilica on Monday after stumbling in public for the second time in three days.

Two church officials flanked the 78-year-old pontiff and took him by the arm as he faltered on his way up the steps during a service in the Basilica of St. John Lateran.

On Saturday, the pope tripped on the steps of St. Peter's Basilica, stopping his fall with his outstretched hands, before two aides helped him back to his feet.

Last month, the Vatican dismissed an Italian newspaper report that the pope was suffering from a benign brain tumor, saying the pontiff was in good health.

The pope lost part of one lung to disease as a young man and is known to suffer some leg pain due to sciatica, for which he undergoes regular therapy and which might explain his apparent trouble climbing steps.

About a month ago I got tangled up crossing a very low fence and took a fall. Ducked the shoulder and rolled over on my back to a sitting position on the ground. Funny that it came relatively naturally and I can only say it was from playing baseball and football in high school years before. I guess you just learn how to fall so it hurts the least.

Now I’m’ not sayin’ I’m not still sore . . . but the last thing I was going to do is stiffarm the ground. When in doubt aim your butt or side to the ground and let some muscle/fat take the hit.

Having fallen a couple of times in the last year at the age of 69 I can say it’s hard to recover.

I can relate to that. I finally swallowed my pride, and started using a cane. Bought me a fancy one, not a plain old-fashioned candy-cane type. Using it has made a difference!

If he retires the office, what do they call him? ExPope, Former Pope.

Benedict is now referred to as "Pope Emeritus". So I'm guessing Francis would be "Pope Emeritus" also.

Maybe we can start numbering Emerituses:

Benedict: Pope Emeritus I
Francis : Pope Emeritus II

If I read it right, he was going up stairs at the time, so he probably did not have that much of his weight going to his wrists.

We had a big spider in the corner of our house and my daughter and I were saying he was hugh. My wife asks “you’ve named him Hugh?”. So after the LOLing we left him there for a month calling him Hugh.

Makes me wonder about the report that he has a brain tumor.

Add Paul VI to the front end of that timeline.

This just doesn’t sound like a big deal to me. A 78 year old man stumbling a couple of times in the last three months isn’t all that uncommon.
