Is it just my experience but are there an inordinate number of scammers out there recently? Its really shot up over the past year.

Popups and such claiming that your computer is infected is an old scam. However one is born every minute.

POP-UP ads may appear on your Apple Device, Mac, iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, saying you are infected with a virus and to call this 800 number for tech support to help you get rid of it. . . THIS IS A SCAREWARE SCAM and it is only an ad designed to remove you from your money. Also cold calls are now being made attempting the same thing where a voice on the other end may say they are calling from Macintosh (the won't say Apple because then Apple can sue the pants off them, similarly when they call about a Windows computer they say they are calling from Windows tech support not Microsoft) and say your computer is reporting a virus. . . and they are here to help. Don't bother. Again, it is a scam. Here is an article on the new phenomenon, old to Windows users, for Mac users of phishers trying to scam Mac, iPhone, and iPad user out of their hard earned cash from MalWareBytes explaining how they do it. Well worth reading. — PING!

Ping to dayglored; Shadow Ace; ThunderSleeps for your ping lists as well as there is spill over.

I got the Safari message on my iPad. I called because it is my mission in life to waste as much of their time as possible while teaching them American slang.

Thanks, I forwarded this to our DIL.

Her son, our grandson, got scammed in the first week of school this fall semester at his new private school

We bought him the new Mac Air for his new private school. He got the phishing scam in the first week of school and fell for it without notifying his parents. When his mother came home with his sister, he told her that his Mac wasn’t working.

He showed her the warning, and she used her credit card to “clear up the problem”.

A few minutes later while limoing he and his sister to after school events, she got a text from her credit card that she had been phished and scammed.

She called the credit card and was told that the Mac repair people were scammers. They were sending her a new card.

The next morning she took the mal wared Mac Air to the local Apple store, they removed the bad stuff and told her to
never do that again.

Several of her son’s classmates got the same bad message. The phishers apparently targeted the new incoming freshmen.
Maybe, the upper classmates were too computer wise to fall for this.

A week or so later, her home office Mac got the same message. She knew what to do.

I didn’t talk to our DIL about this incident, my non techie wife did. So the specifics may be not that specific.

Thanks again.
