I watched the trailer last night. If I’m reading it right, it looks like the film ‘verse went almost the opposite direction of the “expanded universe” books. Whereas in the books, the Rebellion becomes the New Republic, and struggles to swallow the huge galactic political structure they inherit, the new movies make it look as though the Emperor’s death prompted a wave of repression from what was left of the Empire, wiping out (almost) all knowledge of the events of the 6 original movies, and pushing the whole society further towards a kind of dark age.

Yep.

Disavowed Star Wars because of the prequels but I have to admit that the trailer gave me some of those old chills. Hopefully its not like the prequels where the trailers were the only good part.

To each his own, for all of us on FR that is, as for me I will see it twice with my friends.

Same here. This will be one of my few theater experiences. I'll probably have to wait until February though for the crowds to thin out.

I bet this movie is terrific...as for the trailers for the prequels...I did not think they were all that great. This trailer reminds me of when I was kid and saw the first Star Wars trailer and how I felt and became a fan. Looking forward to seeing this movie!

OK, I'll be the first to post the "I've never heard of Star Wars and don't care anything about Hollywood! I haven't watched a movie since 1973 and have NEVER owned a television!"

Just thought I'd get that out of the way.

Seriously though, I stopped caring about Star Wars in 1983, about 2 months after Jedi left the theaters. I'll never understand the obsession people have with it.

Well I was 5 years old when the first Star Wars came out so the movies became very influential for me growing up.

And as a Catholic attending Catholic school, the fundamental story of good vs evil, calm vs. chaos, protection vs. attack (essentially God vs. Devil) correlated well with the overall value system I was being taught. I think that message and story becomes much more ingrained when you are young like that.

I still get goosebumps when I hear Yoda describing the Force on Dagobah.

———— Well then Lucas came out with the next set and Midicholrians etc... and pretty much ruined the whole thing. I’m hoping Abrams brings it back around; it looks like he is by playing up the good vs evil angle in the previews.

Hans Solo throwing a pass to Luke Skywalker just out of reach but he uses the Force to grab it while at the same time repelling the Stormtrooper players from tackling him.
He then crosses the line for a touchdown.

It was found that Leia had deflated the ball so the referee disqualified the touchdown and coach Darth Vader used that pinching motion to choke the referee.

Faux Trek is horrid. A pasty White Brit playing Khan is as bad as having Peter Dinklage play Oprah.

Frankly, the trailer may have given away too much. It looks like Luke assumes the mantle of his father, becoming the new Sith Lord and tries to reestablish the old Empire.

Same here. We're the same age. Don't get me wrong, I LOVED Star Wars when I was a kid. But I quickly lost interest a few months after Jedi. Star Wars was over, and the Terminator became cool.

I meant that just never understood the obsession people have about a 35 year old movie.
