A Michigan man employed at the Hillsdale Bob Evans plant was fired after refusing to remove a Confederate flag from his truck, the Hillsdale Daily News reports. According to the man, his bosses at the plant forced him to remove it after receiving a single anonymous complaint.
Angela Payne, a spokeswoman for the restaurant chain, told NBC24 that the flag was offensive to many customers and employees.
The employee, Wesley Rogers, was told two weeks ago to remove the flag but refused, resulting in his termination.
They said they were doing their best to follow up on a complaint, Rogers told the Daily News. To make [the person who lodged the complaint] more comfortable. But I wasnt comfortable with it. I said it wasnt coming down, no way. Then they showed me my way out.
According to Payne, it isnt his first Confederate flag-related termination he said he was fired from a job at a sausage plant in Hillsdale after refusing to remove the flag.
They were misunderstanding me, Rogers told the Daily News. A lot of people think that its racist. Its not racist; its my heritage. I grew up in the south, in Virginia. Its been made into a symbol of hate. Im not hanging it because Im a racist. Im handing it because Im a southerner.
The Daily News reports that one of Rogerss former co-workers said that Rogers had been flying the flag since earlier this year with no issues. The co-worker added that corporate representatives met at the plant last Wednesday to inform employees that flying the flag will result in termination.
They made it clear. Whoever flies [the Confederate flag] will face termination, the co-worker told the Daily News. He also said that employees raised the issue and questioned supervisors, but received no explanation.
I felt like I had the right to express myself, Rogers told the Daily News.
Someone should complain that the boss’s truck is red. Red is offensive. And another employee’s car has white wall tires. White? Thats offensive. They should remove the tires right now. Offended! Offended!
And I am offended that the plant has grey painted walls. They should demolish the entire plant and build a new one.
Then a lot of folks should start flying it.
Are they gonna fire everyone?
Bob Evans sucks. I make much better sausage from scratch anyway.
“””...the anger grows and one day it will explode.”””
I am afraid the entire world will burn all around people and they will never look up from their iPhones long enough to notice.

“On May 23, 1958, Congress passed Law 85-425, section 410, designating Confederate veterans as American war veterans.”
The union sons of civil war veterans officially support the right of their southern brothers to fly the confederate battle flag as well.
So, some panzy is offended by his flag. He is offended by their kowtowing and thin skin. He get’s fired. Guess we know which “offended-ness” that company values more. Don’t think I’d want to work for a gutless company either.
The factory isn’t even in town so its unlikely many people would even see the flag just when they’re passing by.
200 N Wolcott st Hillsdale MI.
I would walk the parking lot and make anonymous complaints about all the obama stickers. See if they have to be removed.
I am offended when ever I see a obama/biden bumper sticker in the company parking lot. Maybe I outta complain!
Thanks for the link, and I did.
They will get back to me on this./s
Five more years under Democrats, and flying the American flag will be racist.
They’re already banning “America Day” in schools, punishing kids for wearing American flag T-shirts on Cinco de Mayo.
Some interesting local history.
The factory is right next door to the Will Carleton poorhouse. It was apparently a farm where local poor were sent to live so they wouldn’t be homeless or beggars on the streets of Hillsdale. It was named after poet William Carleton who lived there for a while when he was a student at Hillsdale college around the time of the civil war.
He wrote an interesting poem about the place and the woman who owned it.
>>What is the use of heapin on me a paupers shame?
Am I lazy or crazy? Am I blind or lame?
True, I am not so supple, nor yet so awful stout:
But charity aint no favor, if one can live without.<<

Well this could be a very slippery slope. Is there a line where you might think the employer has gone too far?
American flag
Pro-Life sticker
GOP sticker
Athletic team sticker that the employer doesn’t like
Maybe the employer is a Chevy man, and he won’t let the Ford logo in his lot.
The fish logo some cars have
Give an inch...they take a mile.
Firing an American over a flag. Very Naziesque.
Just like the Rainbow colored d o ritos caused me to quit buying any snack out of Plano, Texas, Hillsdale and it’s sausage will be absent from our table.
I consider the first amendment protections for freedom of assembly JUST as valuable as the first amendment provisions for speech, press, religion, and assembly. If the employer is so fickle as to only hire or retain those that are strictly in alignment with their political and non-work related opinions, then he deserves not only the employees that he gets.
That company then also deserves the loss of customers who hear about this practice and decide to spend their money elsewhere. Freedom of choice does not equate to freedom from consequences.
By the governments own designation, the Confederate battle flag is considered an American military flag and has been carried by U.S. soldiers from Iwo Jima to Baghdad.
