A Michigan man employed at the Hillsdale Bob Evans plant was fired after refusing to remove a Confederate flag from his truck, the Hillsdale Daily News reports. According to the man, his bosses at the plant forced him to remove it after receiving a single anonymous complaint.
Angela Payne, a spokeswoman for the restaurant chain, told NBC24 that the flag was offensive to many customers and employees.
The employee, Wesley Rogers, was told two weeks ago to remove the flag but refused, resulting in his termination.
They said they were doing their best to follow up on a complaint, Rogers told the Daily News. To make [the person who lodged the complaint] more comfortable. But I wasnt comfortable with it. I said it wasnt coming down, no way. Then they showed me my way out.
According to Payne, it isnt his first Confederate flag-related termination he said he was fired from a job at a sausage plant in Hillsdale after refusing to remove the flag.
They were misunderstanding me, Rogers told the Daily News. A lot of people think that its racist. Its not racist; its my heritage. I grew up in the south, in Virginia. Its been made into a symbol of hate. Im not hanging it because Im a racist. Im handing it because Im a southerner.
The Daily News reports that one of Rogerss former co-workers said that Rogers had been flying the flag since earlier this year with no issues. The co-worker added that corporate representatives met at the plant last Wednesday to inform employees that flying the flag will result in termination.
They made it clear. Whoever flies [the Confederate flag] will face termination, the co-worker told the Daily News. He also said that employees raised the issue and questioned supervisors, but received no explanation.
I felt like I had the right to express myself, Rogers told the Daily News.
Goddamn these corporate f...ers!
Pretty soon it’ll be the American flag.
I would definitely be wondering who the “customer” was that is offended. After all, this isn’t a restaurant, its a factory that doesn’t have a lot of people coming and going.
I’m guessing it was a bedwetter in the front office who was offended.
The one who can make the biggest ‘stink’ is always the winner in these sorts of things.
On the other hand for every incident like this the ‘anger’ grows and one day it will explode. No one knows when and no one knows what ‘incident’ will light the fuse. But deep down we all know that it will happen.
You are correct, unfortunately.
Why aren't those who loved those victims offended that their grief was disrupted and manipulated to something that had nothing to do with what happened and was not going to do anything to solve the problem of these senseless murderous acts?
And Bob Evans? Clueless. How's this going to play with their mostly southern clientale? And, another thing...read their ingredients some time. "homestyle" it's not!
I have no problem with this. The first amendment protects both the freedom of speech (flying the flag) and the freedom of assembly (employment). Both are at will and both can be exercised.
If the flag owner wanted to continue to fly his flag, he did not need to park at his work. Rather he could have parked nearby and then walked the remaining distance.
But some are more equal than others.......
Just sent a pleasant memo.
Fire those who fly the homofascist flag or the antiChristian “Darwinfish” which uses a historically Christian symbol to bash Christians.
It obviously time for conservatives to start filing complaints about COEXIST bumper stickers or whatever other left wing crap commies put on their cars
Yet, if you walk into a Bob Evans restaurant anywhere in America, you’ll see conservatives giving their money to these tyrants. Not me.
Yep, that would be a very good tactic.
I’m sure the ACLU will be there to defend his First Amendment rights. Right? Wait, what? They aren’t? I’m so damn shocked.
I’d say, “why don’t you bring the people here that I’ve offended so we can discuss this?”. You know damn well no one has complained. I bet the HR employee is of the perpetually offended class and throwing her weight around reverse racism style.
Maybe...they just hate Southern Veterans and are truly racist.
On May 23, 1958, Congress passed Law 85-425, section 410, designating Confederate veterans as American war veterans.
By the governments own designation, the Confederate battle flag is considered an American military flag and has been carried by U.S. soldiers from Iwo Jima to Baghdad.
Out of respect for these American veterans, the Confederate Battle flag certainly does have a place of honor! Those I say, those people (after reading the above law) who try to take their HONOR away by dragging our flag down for their own selfies stupid reasons dishonors and spits in all veterans faces......on-going
Ditto- they just lost my business. I proudly fly my Confederate flag every day right under my American Flag.
This is just more fallout from the Regime’s attempt at turning the Confederate flag into the focus of their latest Two Minute Hate. Never mind health insurance costs being thru the roof, don’t pay attention to the jerry-rigged employment numbers, ignore that fact the Middle East is in flames; let’s all focus our hate on a flag.
