I just remember it being a bunch of gibberish with “Captain Kirk” somewhere in the middle.

Yeah, the 80s were full of songs like that, but I did like a lot of them just the same, songs like “Red Skies at Night” by The Fixx.

Celebrate a touchdown by littering.

Great, just what we need.

Have you had the chance to watch the German production about that time? - Deutschland 83.

I thought it was an excellent portrayal of Commie paranoia.

Yes I did. And you’re about Euro-paranoia.

Largely focused on the US Pershing deployment to Europe to put pressure on the Soviets.

Worked.

Back then we has a leader.

Loved that show.

That period had lots of video (movies, TV episodes, cable programming) about the same topic. You could pool a bunch of those peacenik songs together and make an alternate soundtrack to one of the cheesy films on this subject, such as "Miracle Mile".

Well you know the “N” on their helmet stands for “Knowledge.”

“Party at ground Zero” by Fishbone was one of the more obvious ones, but man were they fun to see live.

I liked Weird Al’s “Christmas at Ground Zero.”

“Christmas at K-Mart” by Root Boy Slim and the Sex Change Band was a local favorite.

There was a lot of fun music in the 80’s.

I was intoxicated one night in my youth, discussing the lyrics to 99 Red Balloons with others in a similar condition, when we agreed that it was probably the dumbest/funniest stupid song ever written in any language.

"worry worry super scurry Call the troops out in a hurry"

Each time we thought we identified the dumbest line in the song, we remembered an even stupider line.

Nuclear war is triggered by these two knuckleheads releasing balloons, the whole world is destroyed, and when it's over, the chick finds one of the balloons!

"super high-tech jet fighters Everyone's a super hero Everyone's a captain Kirk"

You can't get dumber than this song.

There was a Pat Benatar video...IIRC it was “Love Is a Battlefield”...and she was fighting with her parents and they threw her out. She looked like she was about 40. Time for you to go anyway, granny...

And Pat and her fellow hooker pals all dressed in ballerina rags and choreographed their hispanic pimp into submission!

I remember it well.

It stopped being cute when they made their comeback about two years ago with a song supporting Occupy and gay marriage. I like the old stuff. Less Cities, More Moving People was good. Probably anti-something.

I was a German language student at that time. Was conflicted by Nena—attracted by the look and the language but hadn’t yet embraced European armpits... 99 was simpleminded but complex compared to another of my faves: “Da Da Da” by Trio was also very catchy and popular at the time. Simple repetitive lyrics over a cheap Casio keyboard made me wonder if all German popsters were perhaps a bit slow. The Klaus Nomi memorial barrage pretty well put me off German music. Would have gone decades without purposefully listening had Rammstein not appeared in the late 90s.
