TROY, Mich., - A Michigan woman who bought grapes from a Walmart store said she discovered a venomous black widow spider in the package.
Ariel Jackson, 25, said she bought the perforated package of grapes from a Walmart Supercenter in Troy and she discovered the spider when she started washing the fruit.
"She was screaming about a huge spider, and everyone was like, 'Calm down, it's probably nothing,'" Jackson's boyfriend, Michal Frank, 26, told ABC News. "But we took a closer look and lo and behold, it's a black widow. It had the red hourglass-shaped spot on its belly."
Jackson said she called 911.
"I told them that 'this isn't really an emergency, but I have a Black Widow spider in my grapes and I don't really know what to do,'" Jackson told WWJ-TV. "He kind of just paused and was like, 'kill it' and I was like 'you want me to kill it? You're not going to send anyone over?' This is a poisonous spider and he's like, 'yeah, just kill it and throw it away.'"
Frank said it took "quite a few sprays" of insect killer to fell the spider.
"It was definitely frightening," Frank said. "My girlfriend is still definitely shaken up. The smallest little things freak her out now. I mean, it's not every day you see a black widow spider."
Frank said a Walmart employee told them to bring the package back with the spider for a refund, but they decided to just throw it away. Frank said he and Jackson would "still really appreciate an apology from Walmart."
Walmart issued a statement responding to the incident.
"Our stores have procedures in place to help ensure products meet our high expectations for fresh, quality food. We take food safety seriously and encourage customers to work with store management so that appropriate measures can be taken to fully understand what may have happened."
When I was a kid in Sacramento, we had Black Widows all over the place outside the house and in the garage. Dad says, “Don’t mess with those, they are really venomous.”
“OK. Should we kill them.”
“Nah, they’re harmless.”
“Can we kill them if they get in our way?”
“Sure. Just be careful.”
“Thanks Dad. Remember, I turn six tomorrow.”
It was just as normal to be around black widows as it was for the neighbors dog to take a wizz on your lawn.
You smash the spider ..........stupid people!
She wants her 15 minutes of fame and she wants to sue Walmart for as much as she can get!
During a rifle inspection while at Parris Island Boot Camp, our DI looked down the barrel of one recruit's weapon and exclaimed,
"What you got down there.....??"
"It's ALIIIIIIVE!"
The rest of us had a hard time keeping from breaking up.
I think at least half the human debris in America is clueless, helpless and useless. I understand why the LORD flooded the earth. I am surprised he found one human worth saving.
That pathetic wussy female must have never seen a Palmetto Bug!
It is Florida’s euphemistic name for a giant Kafkaesque Cockroach.
I regularly do battle with them.
Trying to freak us out?
Actually, black widow spiders are not uncommon in bunches of grapes.........the washing the stores and distributors do doesn’t always get them out. Nothing to freak out about.
Very common here in VA too.....look under anything in the woods where it’s dark............
They fly and that freaks the hell out of me. You open a door and in they fly. Gaaaaaa. What do you do when they are high up on the vaulted ceiling?
I called 911 when a rattlesnake slithered out of my kitchen cabinet.
The town where I live now is so tiny, the entire night shift of the local
PD responded. All 3 officers. One of them had a tool he called a “snake snatcher.” I asked him if the city council had allocated funds for that.
He said Naw, it was his own. He’d stopped by his house to get it.
They searched for an hour, but the snake had absconded.
The officers thanked me before they left. They hadn’t had that much excitement since a month before, when another lady called about a wild hog that was menacing her chickens.
I sent them off with coffee in go-cups.
I empty a can of RAID...aim high.
It’s less noisy than the Colt .38 Special.
Greatttttttttt was freaking out about spiders now I got that picture in my mind. Thank youuuuuuuuu
Well what happened to the freakin snake? How did you stay there?
Yep...that be the one.
Sounds like the setup for the pain and distress part of the lawsuit to me.
Flavor enhancers.
Stupid.
I don’t even kill them.
I capture them in a glass and set em free outside
