TROY, Mich., - A Michigan woman who bought grapes from a Walmart store said she discovered a venomous black widow spider in the package.
Ariel Jackson, 25, said she bought the perforated package of grapes from a Walmart Supercenter in Troy and she discovered the spider when she started washing the fruit.
"She was screaming about a huge spider, and everyone was like, 'Calm down, it's probably nothing,'" Jackson's boyfriend, Michal Frank, 26, told ABC News. "But we took a closer look and lo and behold, it's a black widow. It had the red hourglass-shaped spot on its belly."
Jackson said she called 911.
"I told them that 'this isn't really an emergency, but I have a Black Widow spider in my grapes and I don't really know what to do,'" Jackson told WWJ-TV. "He kind of just paused and was like, 'kill it' and I was like 'you want me to kill it? You're not going to send anyone over?' This is a poisonous spider and he's like, 'yeah, just kill it and throw it away.'"
Frank said it took "quite a few sprays" of insect killer to fell the spider.
"It was definitely frightening," Frank said. "My girlfriend is still definitely shaken up. The smallest little things freak her out now. I mean, it's not every day you see a black widow spider."
Frank said a Walmart employee told them to bring the package back with the spider for a refund, but they decided to just throw it away. Frank said he and Jackson would "still really appreciate an apology from Walmart."
Walmart issued a statement responding to the incident.
"Our stores have procedures in place to help ensure products meet our high expectations for fresh, quality food. We take food safety seriously and encourage customers to work with store management so that appropriate measures can be taken to fully understand what may have happened."
Should have called Woody Allen....he’s been killing them since he was 30.

Any “duck song” fans on here?
Whilst looking for the duck image, I discovered I can get a T Shirt with him on it!
They’ll be cracking up over that one at the 911 dispatch for weeks to come over that one.
Exactly. Squish it with a paper towel, toss the paper towel, wash the grapes...eat’em.
“Oh my gawd! My Wal-Mart fingernail polish dried a different color than the color chart at the store! CALL ACTION 9 NEWS!”
Ok, so how much money do they want from Walmart to compensate for this tragedy?
“To tell you the truth, I done got attached to the little feller.”
I’ve got a skunk who has taken to sleeping in the shop during the day. I say “hi” to him as he heads out in the evenings. He just kinda looks at me for a few seconds, sniffs the air, and heads out. Lol! But back on topic, there’s black widow’s all over place here, just as there are scorpions, rattlesnakes, big centipedes, tarantulas, all kinds of goodies.
Tennessee here. We see black widow spiders here in the rural area where we live - also coyotes, bobcats, hoot owls & all sorts of other things.
Walmart customer relations: Dear Ms. Jackson, all of us at Walmart are truly saddened that our society has devolved to the point that an adult can be reduced to abject helplessness by the mere sight of a tiny arachnid. I'm sure the settlers and the founders of the republic and the pioneers who opened the country are spinning madly in their graves at the thought.
When you feel able, please come to the store for a free bottle of Valium from our pharmacy department. Remember to read the instructions and don't take all of them at once. Also, remove the sunshade from your vehicle before driving and don't run with forks.
All the best,
Walmart
“Got any spiders?”
Yeah; we have all those you listed, too.
I hardly ever see a black widow around my home now, I think ag chemicals may have killed them along with the “redbugs” (chiggers) that I never see now. I was born in ‘44 and raised about fifty miles from here and we saw black widows all the time, it was dangerous to turn over a rock or a stick of wood. I had one uncle who was bitten on the scrotum while sitting on an outhouse seat and I know of one fellow who carried the nickname “Spider” and apparently got tagged with it because his father was lying in bed recovering from a bite when the boy was conceived. Those things can actually jump something like two or three feet which makes them even more dangerous. I have never seen one inside the house where I now live but we did find them inside when I was growing up. We found snakes inside on a couple of occasions also but fortunately not a venemous one.
I got a bout a zillion of these around my yard. I’d better call in Special Forces or napalm the entire place.
Public schools..!
Thanks for the post; ping. Informative thread BUMP! Haven’t they banned the words “black widow”, yet? /sarc
What an idiot? She’s on top of the food chain, and the little spider doesn’t have a mouth large enough to devour her. Its HUUUUUGE? So huuuuuge that a thumb could crush it? All it takes is to wash the grapes and flush the huuuge itsy bitzy spinder down the drain. Anything to make a buck these days. Hit the Walmart Lotto with some ambulance chaser, we certainly don’t have a shortage of them. Many are serving in congress.
