Apple unveils the all-new Apple TV with Siri Remote, tvOS, and Apple TV App Store
Mac Daily News ^ | Wednesday, September 9, 2015

Apple today announced the all-new Apple TV, bringing a revolutionary experience to the living room based on apps built for the television. Apps on Apple TV let you choose what to watch and when you watch it. The new Apple TV’s remote features Siri, so you can search with your voice for TV shows and movies across multiple content providers simultaneously.

The all-new Apple TV is built from the ground up with a new generation of high-performance hardware and introduces an intuitive and fun user interface using the Siri Remote. Apple TV runs the all-new tvOS™ operating system, based on Apple’s iOS, enabling millions of iOS developers to create innovative new apps and games specifically for Apple TV and deliver them directly to users through the new Apple TV App Store.

“There has been so much innovation in entertainment and programming through iOS apps, we want to bring that same excitement to the television,” said Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of Internet Software and Services, in a statement. “Apps make the TV experience even more compelling for viewers and we think apps represent the future of TV.”

The new Siri Remote dramatically simplifies how you select, scroll and navigate through your favorite content while bringing unique interactivity to the new Apple TV by using a glass touch surface that handles both small, accurate movements as well as big, sweeping ones. Adding touch to Apple TV creates a natural, connected experience, even if the TV screen is on the other side of the room. Developers can take advantage of the built-in accelerometer and gyroscope, and the touch surface on the Siri Remote to create games and other app experiences that have never been seen on TV before.

With Siri, you can use your voice to search TV shows and movies by title, genre, cast, crew, rating or popularity, making it easy to say things like “Show me New Girl,” “Find the best funny movies from the ’80s,” “Find movies with Seth Rogan” and “Find popular TV shows for kids.” Apple TV will search iTunes and popular apps from Netflix, Hulu, HBO and Showtime, displaying all the ways the resulting TV shows and movies can be played. Siri also offers playback control and on-screen navigation, as well as quick access to sports, stock and weather information.*

tvOS is the new operating system for Apple TV, and the tvOS SDK provides tools and APIs for developers to create amazing experiences for the living room the same way they created a global app phenomenon for iPhone and iPad. The new, more powerful Apple TV features the Apple-designed A8 chip for even better performance so developers can build engaging games and custom content apps for the TV. tvOS supports key iOS technologies including Metal, for detailed graphics, complex visual effects and Game Center, to play and share games with friends.

Pricing & Availability

The new Apple TV will be available at the end of October starting at $149 (US) for a 32GB model and $199 (US) for a 64GB model from Apple.com, Apple’s retail stores and select Apple Authorized Resellers. A new Xcode beta is available for developers today that includes the tvOS SDK at developer.apple.com/xcode/downloads. Developers can request an Apple TV developer kit at developer.apple.com/tvos/.

*Siri availability and functionality varies by country. Subscription required for some content.

Tell us, why is it when people link Fact-based articles that show Apple in a Bad light you call it FUD but when you make totally wrong pronouncements and use vague blurbs from articles to try and denounce gadgets not produced by Apple it is not FUD but an informed opinion based on your degree in economics and your acquired knowledge from your CEO experience?

Swordmaker is a paid Apple marketer, which he vehemently denies.

Lying again, I see. You haven't an ounce of evidence to back up your repeated claim calling me, a fellow freeper, a liar. Now you impute to your self a psychiatric degree in your delusional urge to attack me. Way to go, bolobaby.

No evidence? You vomit the evidence all over the forum! No *sane* person would invest that much time shilling for a product/company unless they were getting paid to do it. So, if you are not getting paid, then you clearly have something seriously off kilter.

If the artlcles were actually "fact-based" they would not be FUD. They seldom are "fact-based" but are usually based on already debunked rumors. When that is the case, I will call them FUD, and I will always investigate them to find out where they are getting their "facts." Most often they don't have any and are merely repeating FUD from biased sources based on other biased sources who heard rumors with no basis in facts at all. . . and then I will link to the authoritative sources proving that fact. That is why.

Just as in this case, I had legitimate, qualified sources backing what I was saying. All you had were rumors. I still maintain that it is likely that Amazon is farming out their engineering to Chinese reference makers, since they appear to have gutted their engineering department by laying off dozens of engineers. This Amazon Fire TV may have been the last thing they designed before being given the ax.

I am just interested in truth. . . something you seem to have a very limited connection to.

The truth? You are interested in Apple and any thread that points out the flaws in non-Apple products. The same things a paid marketer would be interested in.

Ahhh see this is why it is so fun. You just proved you are full of sh!t.

It was not a rumor that Amazon had filed with the FCC for a new Fire TV. Yet no where did Amazon make an announcement they were discontinuing the Fire TV as you pronounced. AND there was no article stating the Fire TV was discontinued. Your post saying it had definitely been discontinued is blatant FUD.

And that my FUDster friend is cold hard fact!

BTW when I posted the article telling of the new 50 dollar tablet you called it "rumors from unknown "knowledgable people"?" The link I provided was from the Wall Street Journal and BTW here is the New Fire Tablet:

Fire, 7" Display, Wi-Fi, 8 GB - Includes Special Offers, Black by Amazon Price: $49.99 Free Prime shipping after order is processed

So again how is my linking a story on the New Fire Tablet from the Wall Street Journal considered a "rumor" and your proclaiming the New Fire TV was discontinued and the 50 Dollar tablet not possible considered an informed opinion based on fact and enhanced by your economics degree and your vast experience as a CEO?

No, Mad Dawgg, the article you posted for the continuation of the Fire TV cited THIS as the only evidence that a new Amazon TV was going to be released, all other articles referred to his claims:

A new FCC filing . . . for an “HDMI Digital Media Receiver” with support for 802.11ac WiFi and Bluetooth 4.1 and that it comes from a company called Quill Royal LLC which uses a PO Box in Boise, Idaho as its street address… suggesting that the company may only really exist on paper.

Which the author of that article CHOSE to interpret meant that Quill Royal LLC was somehow a pseudonym for Amazon, ignoring the fact that Amazon had no need to hide behind such a front organization for FCC licensing because they were ALREADY in the set-top streaming video box business and would not be revealing anything to any competition.

Hiding behind a pseudonymic company name is something a NEW ENTRANT COMPANY uses to keep their entry into the market quiet until they burst on the scene as a surprise. Amazon doesn't need to do that. Apple did that with the iPhone while getting FCC licensing and has not needed to do that since. Amazon's last licensing did not do that. Why do it now?

I still stand by everything I said about Amazon's $50 Kindle Tablet. READ your own Wall Street Journal and see where they got their information. It came from unnamed "knowledgeable sources." That is exactly what constitutes a RUMOR, Mad Dawgg. If someone won't put there name on a report, it's a rumor, nothing more. You cannot put any more credibility on it than that.

What did I state that was UNTRUE???? Where was any false analysis? Where's your proof that Tablet was designed at Amazon by their engineers in the USA? You have none. Nothing has changed.

I just found proof of my contention about the new Amazon tablet on Amazon's own tech specs of its new tablet, Dawgg. . . proof that they are having these tablets made by lowest bidder reference tablet makers:

Size: 7.5" x 4.5" x 0.4" (191 x 115 x 10.6 mm)
Weight: 11.0 ounces (313 grams)
Actual size and weight may vary by configuration and manufacturing process

If Amazon were engineering this tablet, they'd know the exact size and weight. Since they don't know it, they are accepting whatever the contractor is selling them that has a 7" screen that meets their other over all specs for Storage, case color, and has their name on it. LOL!

hahaha OK then so I guess everyone else was wrong and you were right. There is no new Amazon Fire TV coming out...

hahahaha You do understand that what you claim is rumor was actually fact and what you claimed as fact that Amazon was discontinuing the Fire TV was 100% wrong.

And btw you kept asking if they are still in the hardware business where is the stuff... Well the stuff is here. And once again I am right and you were 100% wrong. First TV is not discontinued.

Good Job FUDster...!

Were they here when we were discussing this? No. Is the fact they are here now change anything about then? No. Is this proof that Quill Royal LLC was Amazon? Nope, not in the least. Are all those engineers that were laid off still unemployed? You bet they are.

I just question why it took a retailer with the skill of Amazon almost FOUR months to replace the Fire TV. It just doesn't make sense if it was such a major seller.

"Were they here when we were discussing this? No. Is the fact they are here now change anything about then?"

Yeah it changes a bit see someone who was woefully uniformed decided to spread a bit of FUD when he posted: "Amazon Fire TV has been discontinued due to problems with functionality and lackluster sales.

That FUDster was you.

Then when a few of us started posting evidence that there was a new unit on the way you started with it being nothing but rumors and kept claiming if there is a new unit where is it? And to try and make your 100% wrong statement fit the facts you claimed they were farming it out.

So bottom line, you lied and got caught.

now you've tried to obfuscate that fact by claiming the article was just indeed rumor and that your info was solid. Well if that is so then why does the appearance of the new unit totally prove your statement wrong? If my article was rumor and yours was fact why was mine proved correct and yours proved wrong?

Here is a hint: "I was right, you were wrong!"

No, Dawgg, a different interpretation of facts and a different conclusion, based on those facts, is not a lie. The older model was, in fact, discontinued for the reasons I listed. That four months later they brought out a vastly improved version after letting their previous model be completely out of stock for one-third of a year while they scrambled to come up with a far better replacement, is good proof of those facts.

Sorry no. you said the Fire TV was discontinued. and then you posted this: "Why did Amazon lay off most of their hardware engineering staff last month? There website for Amazon Fire TV says it is out of stock and no known date for restocking. That is not the indicator of a new product coming anytime soon."

Well apparently it is an indicator.

You were caught in a lie and tried to fast talk your way out of it. Then you kept asking where is it then if there is a new item. And claimed the link I posted was nothing more than rumor.

You were not saying they were stopping production of one version to bring out another if so you would have mentioned it. Instead you kept indicating it was nothing more than rumors. It won't work, you lied and you were caught. I would gather that saying something is discontinued and claiming any new versions are just rumor are among the highest level of FUD reports one can engage in. Clearly you knew what you were doing. But then it does not surprise me. So many times you've been caught and tried to talk your way out of it.

The best part for me is it is so entertaining to watch you try. I've been entertaining three of my friends with you verbal gymnastics. They love how you tried to defend your rumor against my fact link (you know the one you called a rumor yet it was pretty much right on every point.) and pulled the Economist card And the CEO card. hahahaha They call you C-E-Onomist... I think it fits you perfectly hahahaha.
