NFL Films' 'Do Your Job' offers unique glimpse into Patriots

If last night’s “America’s Game” was a winning scratch ticket for Patriots fans, “Do Your Job: Bill Belichick and the 2014 Patriots” is the series of Powerball numbers.

The coach gives NFL Network unprecedented access in tonight’s 8 p.m. special and offers a real window into how his Patriots do business. Belichick and his staff talk about everything from calculating game plans to making decisions in the heat of the moment.

Here is a preview of some of the best moments from the show:

Mystery solved

Who is Ernie Adams? What does he do? These are two questions that have mystified fans and media alike for as long as Adams has been around. The “football research director” has long been a ghost; seen occasionally but never heard from.

Adams goes on camera for “Do Your Job,” and it turns out, his research may have been the key to winning Super Bowl XLIX. Prior to the game, Adams had been doing film study and had seen a red zone route he thought he should bring to the practice field. He had all of the cornerbacks try to defend against it, including Malcolm Butler. In the waning moments of the Super Bowl, the Seattle Seahawks offense ran that play. Butler was ready.

"..the Jealousy and Envy Crowd what I meant was that there are gonna be people that oppose Brady just 'cause he got the girl, oppose Brady 'cause he's tall and good-looking and a star quarterback and wanted him punished on that basis... a lot of alignment against Brady was simply based on jealousy and envy and a lot of people hoping Brady got the four games just 'cause it's justice.  "Nobody should be this lucky to be that good-looking, that tall, that good an athlete, with that good-looking kids get the beautiful girl.  Nobody should have that kind of luck!" Those people are all over the place. You'll find them all over the place, and those are the people that will be upset here.” ~Rush Limbaugh

Among the findings:

— The Patriots would send low-level employees into the visiting locker room to steal the play sheet, consisting of the first 20 scripted offensive calls, or into the visiting team hotel to look for playbooks and scouting reports.

— When at home, the Patriots would scramble and jam the coach-to-quarterback radio line of their opponents, and it happened so often that when a league official was told to sit in the coaches’ box and wait for it to happen, it did, as expected, on a big third-down play.

— Deflategate is seen by some owners as a “makeup call” over Spygate.

— From 2000 to 2007, the Patriots videotaped the signals of opposing coaches in 40 games.

— Two teams caught the Patriots videotaping opposing coaches’ signals in 2006, but the NFL failed to act.

— Goodell ordered tapes and notes from the Patriots destroyed, eliminating “a library of scouting material.”

— Goodell told Sen. Arlen Spector that the Patriots’ tapes destroyed by NFL employees went back to the 2006 season, but then confessed that the Patriots began taping in 2000 and that the destroyed notes, on mostly AFC East rivals, went back to 2002.

— The Patriots had an employee, Ernie Adams, whose job it was to spend all week decoding signals on spreadsheets obtained by a scout at Patriots’ future opponents’ games.

— Patriots videographers were told to put tape over their team logos and say they were from Patriots TV or Kraft Productions when questioned by opposing team’s security. In November 2006, the Senate investigation of Spygate said Patriots staff member Matt Estrella said he was “taping panoramic shots of the stadium.”

— The Patriots would sign players recently cut by upcoming opponents and “pay them only to help decipher signals.”

You keep posting that, but you also continue to ignore the facts of how the Patriots operate. Frankly, few gave a damn about Brady. It’s the whole organization that is deserving of a severe backhand for a decade of behavior.

Brady was a cheater long before Deflategate. In permanent ink on his bio is: “I dumped my pregnant girlfriend for a supermodel.” He’s obsessed only with himself, and will use anyone — girlfriend, wife, ball boys — to get what he wants, the “greatest quarterback of all time” label. He may get it, but he’s also the “biggest d-bag of all time,” too.

Lol, decisions are easy when you have the other teams defensive play book.

Belichick looks for players who are smart and love football. The players love playing for him. It’s a winning combination. The Patriots without Brady are just another team. Even so, Belichick is probably the best coach ever.

Malcolm Butler’s interception was probably the greatest play of all time but he was just following what the coaches had told him. Just doing his job.

“It’s the whole organization that is deserving of a severe backhand for a decade of behavior.”

A decade? On average, they have been in nearly every other super bowl for the last 14 years.

That’s called a dynasty for you kids scoring at home.

Surprised Rush would prop up a cheater.

Well, no one is perfect, except Manning when he plays Brady in the SB

Say, anyone know where I can get a copy of that book about the Pat’s perfect season? What was the title..yeah I remember now, it was 19-0.....oh wait....

“Greatest play of all time”

Whaaaat? Crissake the ball was thrown right to him, it don’t get any easier than that.
Pats didn’t win that game as much as Seattle lost it. Most bone headed play ever called. Three downs left to move ball 1 yd with the games best running back and Carroll decides to pass?

That’s the second time the Pats were handed a gift SB win. The fitst tome was a blown Brady fumble against Oakland which allowed Pat’s to advance in playoffs. They even made up the “BradyTuck Rule”, which was so stupid the rescinded it later.

Keeping in mind of course that the pregnant girlfriend he left is ALSO a supermodel. Some people just get dealt all the cards.

So many haters, so few brains.

Brady just beat the pants off the NFL office and their media lackeys in federal court, which exposed the commissioner as a blatant liar.

Get it? Brady won and the haters lost again.

In response, ESPN writes an unsorted story about nefarious deeds by (mostly unnamed) Patriot employees.

The New York - based national media hates the Pats and can manipulate low information fans in the same way the media attacked Palin.

Put it this way, if the Pats happened to be located in New York, the media treatment and public perception would be 100% different.

How ironic of you. And might I add your response is a bit of a projection too.

I think it’s the Pat haters who are wearing the tin foil hats. The win because they are a better team.

It was thrown right to the receiver. Butler jumped the route and stole the ball. If he had not, Seattle scores and wins. It was a great play but I understand your feelings. If they weren’t my team, I might feel the same way.

It’s a shame they have to act with zero integrity. They have great coaching, great players and a committed organization. They could probably achieve nearly the same success without video taping, bugging locker rooms, stealing play calls and altering the balls after the refs check them. There really is no excuse. It’s almost Hillary-like pathological behavior.

The amazing thing about the Patriots, and this is not a knock, is that in all of their superbowls it literally came down to one play. For the first three, it was a field goal or go ahead score to win by 3. Then the Giants eeked past them with two unlikely plays. Then last year, Seattle had them dead to rights at the 1 yard line, and IMO the guy made an incredible play. It was a very Seattle D style play to go right in there and out work the receiver.

The fact they get to the Super Bowl 6 times is a credit, and the tiny margins either way show how close the games all were.
