Trek to Discover Truth About Yeti Foiled by Taliban

Reinhold Messner, an Italian mountaineer, aimed to test Oxford University scientist theory that yeti is ancient hybrid of a brown bear and a polar bear

An expedition led by one of the world’s most acclaimed mountaineers to find out once and for all whether the yeti really exists has been thwarted by the Taliban.

The trip to the remote mountains of northern Pakistan was to have been led by Reinhold Messner, an Italian mountaineer who was the first person to climb Everest without additional oxygen and also to scale each of the world's tallest 14 peaks.

He was hoping to gather evidence in support of a theory put forward by Oxford University scientists that the yeti, long thought to be a hairy hominid that walks on two legs, could in fact be an ancient hybrid of a brown bear and a polar bear.

The 70-year-old adventurer has long been fascinated by the yeti, but believes that the creature is some sort of Himalayan bear, just as he believes that sightings of Big Foot, or Sasquatch, in the Rocky Mountains are nothing more mysterious than grizzly bears.

He and his team were hoping to capture a wild bear in the mountains of northern Pakistan in order to take blood and other samples that they could then compare with the remains of purported yetis collected over the years. The expedition was supposed to have been conducted in secrecy because of security fears.

Any seventy year old who wants to travel to Pakistan to climb mountains in order to capture a cross between a grizzly bear and a polar bear, has got to be certifiably nuts.

We can only hope that the Taliban discover the Yeti.

Bon appetit, Yeti my dear :)

I wouldn't call Reinhold Messner nuts but he certainly never backed down from a challenge. He was a great mountaineer because he had that unusual combination of boldness and caution. Bold enough to attempt the unthinkable but cautious enough to back off if the circumstances called for it.

If a person were preparing a list of the living people who are arguably the best at what they do (or did if their active career is over), the list would real short before Reinhold Messner's name would appear.

There was a creature with a horn and scales on its hairy back. A Gatto or something like that. It bite Kirk and Kirk bite it back. The Gatto died from rabies. (Ok, I made that up).

There was also the Michelle Obama look-alike creature on M113 that lived off of humans by sucking the salt out of their bodies. My God, they had Michelle and Obama in mind when they wrote that episode! Was it the “That Which Survives” episode?

Then there was Gorn. Looked a lot like Chris Matthews, Howard Dean, Anthony Weiner, and Bernie Sanders all wrapped into one body.

Hillary looks like the creature in “Devil in the Dark”. It looked like a huge Egg Foo Yung with 8 legs and crawled on its stomach. Yep. That’s Hillary alright.

I was very young when I watched that show, but I remember it had many monsters that scared the heck out of me! I swear I remember some kind of yeti though.

Do they really think the Taliban would believe that anybody would be mucking around in their mountains looking for a “Yeti?”

A few years ago[2002] the locals[maybe Taliban] slit the throat of a crytozoologist[Jordi Magraner] in Western Pakistan.

He was looking for the ‘Barmanu’---Snowman. Some believed he ‘helped’ various intelligence agencies and such. Locals say he was too friendly with the local boys.

Anyone who has climbed Everest without oxygen is bound to be missing a few of "the little gray cells"

The late Mulla Omar was a yeti. Taliban don’t want anyone to know that.

Yeti, Schmeti. It is the Abominable Snowman!

How old must one be to know that?

Reinhold Messner is one of the greatest mountaineers in world history, but this latest notion of his is... just a bit quixotic.

That’s not a bear in your photo. Obviously something else.
