Any seventy year old who wants to travel to Pakistan to climb mountains in order to capture a cross between a grizzly bear and a polar bear, has got to be certifiably nuts.

I wouldn't call Reinhold Messner nuts but he certainly never backed down from a challenge. He was a great mountaineer because he had that unusual combination of boldness and caution. Bold enough to attempt the unthinkable but cautious enough to back off if the circumstances called for it.
If a person were preparing a list of the living people who are arguably the best at what they do (or did if their active career is over), the list would real short before Reinhold Messner's name would appear.
