Haven't done one for a while and with all that is going on I though it would be a good idea to do a Weekly Prepper Thread, for posting tips, new products, good prep buys etc.....
There is no greater disaster than to underestimate danger.
Underestimation can be fatal.
Mmmmm . . . bookmark!
We had a couple of weeks electrical outage one summer during our hottest month of the year.
We just happened to have a couple of window air condidtioners from when our central air was not working and waiting for repairs.
We stuck those in a couple of bedroom windows. Ran a TV, air conditioners, refrigerator, freezer, and oxygen concentrator with an extra plug left for the electric skillet or microwave. My Dad could not have survived without the oxygen. The air conditioner and TV meant he was just a comfortable as when the electricity worked. And we all appreciated the comfortable temperature at night.
An old time vacuum style coffee maker! We used to have one that used a metal container on top instead of glass. Made pretty good coffee.
Mom had an accident though, let it get to boiling too hard and walked by it. Don’t know if she accidentally brushed against it or whether the rocking action caused it to tip over.
She instinctively reached out to catch it. Could have been a really bad burn. Back then we could get a burn medicine called butesin picrate - She grabbed a container of that and spread it all over her arms and hands and didn’t even get a blister. I don’t know why they quit making/selling that stuff. It kinda made your arm yellow, but it worked great.
I dug thru the stuff from my mom’s house and found her old pressure cooker. It’s 16 quarts...kind of big. I’ll play with this one but I think there’s a smaller one in my near future.
you are welcome.
I’ve got one of the little guys too. Haven’t used it in a long time though. Things these days tend to be microwaved or crockpotted, or open a jar and fix it quick.
Used to make a really good dish called hot pot. It was one of the recipes in the book that came with it. Had pork chops taters, and onions, but I can’t remember the rest.
Anyway, yes the meat is very tender - that’s one of the pluses of using the big canner and canning my meats. They taste great and are very tender - Important when you have lost as many jaw teeth as I have. LOL
Thanks very much. For my birthday next month I’m getting a good quality pressure canner.

I know I got mighty sick of C Rats after just a couple of days. MREs didn’t exist when I was in. As nasty as they can be they are light years ahead of MFrs and Beans. LOL
Thanks again.

And will be handy when the feds cut off other forms of communication.
Hubby brought his antenna tower when we moved. We might be able to talk to you when he gets it installed!
I’d say get comfortable with it and see what you think! I was hooked the first try, after realizing I wasn’t going to have beans all over the ceiling and walls!
Let me know how it goes or if you have any questions.
I’m making enchiladas tonight with chicken I canned. I LOVE having meat already cooked and ready to use!
I hear ya on the teeth! I asked my dentist about dentures last time I went - just pull what’s left and be done with it would be great! but he wants to nickel and dime me over the next 20 years instead.
I’m an oddity ... we had both C Rats and MREs (depending on the Mission, location and who was supplying us) I actually liked the C Rats, the MREs stopped me up for days but were far easier to carry and consume. I have also heard that the MREs had more calories which is basically what we needed.
But to just sit down and eat, I liked, no really, I liked the C Rats. (side note) I would trade all kinds of stuff for the canned Fruitcake... I just loved the stuff. If I could find a case of C Rat Fruitcake I would probably buy it and eat it for breakfast.
Thank you for the recipes! Can’t wait to try some of this! Hope to see more in the future!
Kart, I love these threads. Our family has made great strides in our prepping but still feel so lost at times. I always read these threads eagerly and try to add something new to our preps on a monthly basis as time/money allow. Thanks so much for taking the time to get the information out to us and to all the freepers that add their own hints and tips. It’s truly been a blessing for us!
That is interesting about butesin picrate. Abbot Labs quit making it and no one has filled the void. Seemed to be a very effective topical ointment.
I highly recommend lavender essential oil for burns. If stored in a cool, dark place it will last for a very long time. My MIL burned her thumb on my stove but the pain went way quickly after rubbing oil on it. I’m still learning about all the different oils and how to use them. I’ve got peppermint oil on my temples right now in an attempt to get rid of a headache. I will definitely be adding more varieties to my medicine cabinet!
sound great, thank you!
Probably traded that can for Fruitcake
Do as many as your want, as far as I’m concerned.
I will let you know, when I’m ‘legit’ :-)
