Wingy Manone ("wingy" because he played with one arm/hand)

Roger Dancz did a show called Introduction to Jazz.

I did a show on WVGS, 'Wednesday Night Jazz'.

Two of my long favorite Wingy Manone recordings are early ones, both recorded in the year 1930:

“Wailing Blues” recorded under the pseudonym ‘The Cellar Boys.’

“Up the Country Blues” recorded under ‘Barbecue Joe and his Hot Dogs.’

The 1920s style he’s playing on the show now was certainly energetic... I guess that’s why they called it “hot” jazz.

As a kid, I picked up an original Columbia 78 of that Goodman recording “Why Don’t You Do Right?” at a garage sale. And I played it on my great-grandmother’s Victrola (which my family acquired after her death in 1969) until the grooves were practically gone.

That Victrola was really designed for late-1910s/early-1920s acoustic records, not 1940s ones. The heavy arm used to really eat into them. But I was a kid. I didn’t know any better. I didn’t even know to change needles after each playing.

My Dad told me he liked this “hot jazz” as a boy (born in 1920)

It’s interesting to turn on the radio and hear it today :)

I have a feeling that Benny might’ve had access to marijuana long before it was de rigueur.

Did that Victrola have the big acoustic horn on the top?

He attributes his long life to smoking pot.

No, it was a more modern cabinet-style piece, with a section below with folders to hold the records. Technically, it’s a “Sonora” brand model, circa 1918 or 1919. I still have it, and indeed, occasionally play records on it. Although, only ones of 1910s/20s vintage, which the heavy arm doesn’t seem to eat up the shellac like the later 78’s.
