Photo of my hometown of Hanover Michigan taken by my great grandfather in 1913.

My uncle has been digging through the thousands of old negatives and glass plate negatives of photos my great grandfather took. I posted the full size photo because its really the only way to truly appreciate it. I think it says a great deal about life in southern Michigan 102 years ago.

That “Buffalo Bill Circus Excursions” signage is pretty sweet. I’m sure it was all hand painted, probably by a serious artist who needed to make a few bucks while waiting to be discovered :)

What is amazing to me is the fact that my great grandfather would have only been 16 or 17 years old at the time. In those days photography was still a considerable investment in money, time, and skill. The photo was taken from atop the steeple of the church.

What I found most interesting was the lack of residential buildings. Town was where business was done but most people were rural.

It was also fairly common in those days for a business owner to have living quarters in the second floor.

No electric poles visible, no telegraph lines visible. I believe I do see a telegraph pole in the bottom left of the image, near the railroad tracks, then more towards the middle of the picture.
