Apple Watch tallies 42% of total dollars spent on wearables in the first half of 2015
Apple World Today ^ | August 13, 2015 | Dennis Sellers

How is the Fitbit faring against the Apple Watch? We now know, thanks to an upcoming report from 1010data's Ecom Insights. AppleWorld.Today received an advance copy of the report, which will be released next week.

In just three months of availability, Apple now has 42% of total dollars sold in the first half of the year followed by Fitbit at 31%. Motorola, Garmin, Jawbone, Polar, Pebble and Samsung combined make up just 15%, according to 1010data's Ecom Insights, which measures what consumers are purchasing online. However, when we look at units, Fitbit is number one with 35% of the market and Apple #2 at 11%.

Apple.com sells the most wearables, accounting for 41% of total dollars, followed by Amazon at 43%, and Best Buy and Fitbit with 5% each.

This research comes from 1010data’s Ecom Insights panel.  The panel consists of millions of online shoppers in the U.S. who allow 1010data to anonymously track their online behavior for market research purposes, including e-commerce activity.

For the first quarter of 2015 the total dollar spend in the smartwatch segment was split among four major competitors: Motorola (33%), Pebble (23%), Samsung (16%), and LG (12%). Then the Internet blew up with news of Apple’s first new product category since the iPad. The Apple Watch was announced in March and went on sale on April 24.

Since then Apple has commanded 88% of the smartwatch category, with Motorola, Pebble, LG, and Samsung combined accounting for just over 10% of the category. Ecom lists wearables in three segments. The first is smartwatches, devices such as the Apple Watch or Pebble that are multi-purpose devices. The second is activity trackers, such as the Fitbit or Jawbone that are dedicated towards fitness. And the third is simply the combination of the first two.

Prior to Apple entering the market, the average sales price (ASP) of a smartwatch was $184. In the second quarter of 2015, the ASP of a smartwatch rose 138% to $438.The best selling smartwatch on the market is the Apple Watch Sport 42mm Space Gray Aluminum Case with Black Sport Band, which is on the more affordable end of the Apple Watch pricing spectrum.

While not quite as dominant as Apple in smartwatches, Fitbit still holds a commanding market share lead in both dollars and units when it comes to activity trackers. For the six months ending June 30, FitBit earned 62% of total dollars, followed by Garmin at 7%, Jawbone at 5% and Polar at 4%.

Of course, category definitions are never easy. The Apple Watch is a smartwatch, but it also tracks things like heart rate and distance traveled just like the Activity Trackers. The Fitbit is an activity tracker but it also tells time like a watch. So which products are in which category? Can a product be both?

When you combine "smartwatch" and "smartwatch plus activity trackers" categories, in just three months of availability, Apple now has 42% of total dollars sold in the first half of the year followed by FitBit at 31%. Motorola, Garmin, Jawbone, Polar, Pebble and Samsung combined make up just 15%.

When we change over to units the script flips with Fitbit in the drivers seat at 35% and Apple #2 at 11%. Apple.com sells the most wearables, accounting for 41% of total dollars, followed by Amazon at 43%, and Best Buy and Fitbit with 5% each.

1010data’s Ecom Insights panel consists of millions of online shoppers in the U.S. who allow1010data to anonymously track their online behavior for market research purposes, including e-commerce activity. Retailers measured include the top 100 online mass retailers in the United States that – according to 1010data’s estimates – make up over 95% of hard line goods ordered online.

Caught you lying again. Your watch is only WATER RESISTANCE to 50 meters, but Casio says you can't snorkel, jetski or scuba dive with it.

You need to quit retelling the same lie over and over..........

Typo???

I don't know where they learned percentages but I'm sure 43% is greater than 41%.

I learned a lot on that thread and I am going make my own antenna for outside and buy a signal amplifier and a 75/300 ohm adapter. I would know none of this except for freepers posting there and edumacating me

Casio calls it water resistant. Same thing as waterproof!!! Hold your tongue clown.

I have never had a Casio leak in water EXCEPT that battery replacement is never done as well (sealed) as at the factory and it might get in water due to this. But prior to opening up a Casio to replace the battery? Never a leak.

Casio batteries last ten years these days so Casios are waterproof! What is the life of the battery in the Apple Watch? Eh, genius?

water resistant IS NOT THE same thing as waterproof.

If you would pull your head out of your butt and wipe the poop out of your eyes, you would see this.

OK Genius if your watch is WATER{ROOF to 50m, why does Casio tell you NOT to Snorkel, Jetski. or Scuba dive with it?????

Q:What is the difference between Waterproof and Water Resistant watches?
A: The amount of water pressure the watch can take. Prices differ greatly between Water Resistant or a Waterproof Watches. Which one to get depends on what you need it for.

Waterproof watches cannot take Any pressure but they’re sealed enough to survive a shower.
Water Resistant Watches are sealed to witstand some pressure.

Water resistance is tested under static conditions. Wearing a watch which is 50 metres water resistant in water will expose the watch to a much greater pressure than during a 50 metre static test. Therefore the number of metres shown on the watch does not indicate the depth that the watch can be taken to.

Some watches show ‘M’ some ‘ATM’- 1 ATM = 1 Atmosphere is the pressure that surrounds us on land. 10 Meters down, under water the pressure will be 2 ATM. Every additional 10 meters below water will add an other atmosphere. So on 30 Meters the pressure will be 4ATM (3+1) - Only a 200ATM Water Resistant Watch can take that amount of pressure!

Here is a general guide
50M = Shower Proof - it’s ok to get it wet a bit.
100M = Extended Water Exposure good for swimming or snorkeling.
200M = Pressure Resistant made for Scuba and Skin Diving

Scuba Diving Watches also have a One Way Rotating Bezel that only rotates counter clockwise. This is used to measure elapsed time underwater. - Turn the bezel until the dot is on the Big (minute) Hand when you begin your dive and note the elapsed time upon surfacing. Must have as a back up for Dive Computers.

Q: A 100M watch is surely strong enough on a shallow dive?!
A: No! It isn’t because it has not been high pressure sealed. 100M watches are only good for Snorkeling!
Q: What will happen if I try to dive with a watch that is less than 200M Resistant?
A: The watch’s seal will be broken, it will flood and break..irrepairably.
Q: So which watch to buy?
A: Think about what you need it for and bear in mind that Scuba Watches (200M) look really cool but tend to be very heavy, which makes them uncomfortable for everyday use.

So why won't you allow other FReepers the same courtesy– to freely discuss their interests– that you were afforded?

Here the Apple Watch is tested to 40m

This is WAY beyond what Apple says.

Where are the real world tests for your watch??????

*Only watches marked with the words “DIVER’S WATCH 200M” can be worn while scuba diving (with air tanks).

**Even if a watch is water-resistant, do not operate its buttons or crown while it is submersed in water or wet.
However, “DIVER’S WATCH 200M” casing models permit underwater button operation.

########### There are lots of Casio watches marked “DIVER’S WATCH 200M” which means suitable for scuba diving which means water proof.

###########Yes the ones I buy are 50 meter water resistant but spend a bit more and you get a waterproof Casio good for scuba diving UNLIKE that crappy Apple watch and go buy one in gold. Send them more money!

heh...... your link URL uses the words “water resistant”. IOW Casios will test the same or better

So Apple watches are merely water resistant??? Go back to your drawing board and your Peanuts cartoons.

Where are the REAL WORLD tests for your watch???

You keep telling me its good to 50m, so you should have some test to prove that, otherwise your watch is no good for swimming.

Casio 200 meter dive watches are waterproof way beyond that shoddy Apple Watch. Casio says they are good for scuba diving. Go ask Casio for the tests on those watches

The Apple watch isn't marketed or designed as a “Dive Watch”.

I'm sorry your straw man argument isn't working.

You are trying to compare a simple watch to a Smart watch.

Your watch is “just” a watch, the Apple Watch is a Smart Watch.

Come back when you discover the difference.

Only a dumb watch would be bragging about being water resistant (or water proof) to three meters. You are being scammed! I call this Apple fanboi bling.

Ok give a list of reasons why your watch is better than the Apple Watch.
I want examples of what features your watch has that are better, or a list of things your watch does better.

Neither one of them send or receive emails from underwater.

For one, it was never supposed to.

For the other, it leaves that ability (and thus a large part of fanboy charm) ashore, where the watch should have been left to make it easier to steal.

So far, if the need of a moment would be to keep track of time while underwater, the winner is ----

the envelope please

but can an
elephant step on
it and
still hear ticking
of time,
Ticking Away
that's what I
want to know

Dennis keeps claiming HIS watch is better. All I am getting is “it's not waterproof”.

How many people go swimming with a watch?

I want a LIST of things his watch can do that makes it better than an Apple Watch.

Lets compare FEATURES!!!
