Predominantly electric guitar.

Talk to me like I'm a four year old -- since that's about where I am when it comes to music. :)

Was that sound produced by a special electric guitar or was it "plucked" (is that the word?) in such a way that any ordinary guitar could make it? It also sounds like there's a xylophone somewhere in the mix to my admittedly tin ear.

It IS ‘plucked’ and a very distinctive style as to the period guitar. Some FReeper could tell you.

Theere definitely is a xylophone, and the electric guitar has some distortion on it.
