Agent Reyes first appeared on "The X-Files" during the show's eighth season. A friend of Agent John Doggett (Robert Patrick), who had been assigned to the X-Files following Mulder's (David Duchovny) disappearance, Reyes eventually joined Doggett as his partner in investigating strange cases.

... Besides Reyes, the list of characters confirmed to return for an appearance in the "X-Files" event series so far includes the Lone Gunmen (Dean Haglund, Tom Braidwood and Bruce Harwood), Walter Skinner (Mitch Pileggi) and the Cigarette Smoking Man (William B. Davis).

Also, in the Carter-approved comic book, the three went underground to “further pursue our investigations”.

I distinctly recall Mulder calling him “Cancer Man” in one or two episodes. Suddenly that changed to “Cigarettes Smoking Man”. I think some production money came in and the script changed forever

I remember that too and I think you’re right.

I thought the Lone Gunmen were killed off...

So was the CSM. And the alien invasion was scheduled 12/22/12. Part of me is wondering if they will be going with an alternate timeline or if the say the events in the final episode of season 9 was a dream sequence.

Who knows? As an X-Files fan I'm excited. I doubt we will see Robert Patrick back which is fine with me. I guess Duchovny doesn't like him at all.

You are both right. I went ahead and re-watched the entire series (minus most of 8 and 9) on Amazon Prime as they have it in HD.

He is referred to “the smoking man”, “cancer man”, “old smoky”, “CGB Spender”, “the man who smokes those cigarettes”, and those are just the ones on the top of my head.

Jerry Hardin played the source “Deep Throat,” while Steven Williams played his successor, “X.” Both died in the original run of X-Files.

Cigarette Smoking Man was killed off, apparently — but Carter said, “you can’t kill the Devil”.

The Well-Manicured Man won’t be back, the actor has passed.

I always figured that killing off the Lone Gunmen was a brain-dead idea, but that they were plausible as candidates for having faked their deaths.

I’d be surprised if the show can be rebooted and hold the same interest as those first six years did.
