This week, shoppers at Whole Foods in Brentwood, California spotted the new health drink, priced at $5.99 (£3.85) per bottle on the shelves. For just under four pounds, you got a bottle filled with water and three stalks of asparagus.
Was this the new maple water? Could Whole Foods get any more ridiculous? Are they becoming a parody of themselves? There were so many questions.
Alerted by bemused customers on Twitter, Eater called the store to investigate. They were initially told by an employee that the product was indeed new to the store. Weve had them on the shelf for the last few days, he said.
He elaborated: Its water, and we sort of cut asparagus stalks down so theyre shorter, and put them into the container.
Asked to what purpose, he clarified: Well, its to drink. The nutrients from the asparagus do transfer into the water.
Cue a barrage of WTAF on social media.
But, dont worry, it was all just an innocent mistake. Honest.
Whole Foods senior media relations specialist Liz Burkhart was quick to nip the whole thing in the bud overnight. We looked into this right away and found that this item was being carried in just one of our stores in California, she said.
It was meant to be water with the essence of vegetables and/or mushrooms to be used as broth (similar to a bone broth), which are typically made over a long period of time soaking in water. The product was made incorrectly and has since been removed from the one store where it was carried.
Phew. The world hasnt gone completely mad then. Or has it?
The coconut “water” I buy at the Asian store is delicious. I happen to love coconut.
I can’t comment on the stuff that is sold in the grocery stores. Never tried it. Costs twice as much.
That's because you didn't put the lime in the coconut.
If people are stupid enough to buy it, I don’t know why anyone cares.
People bought millions of Pet Rocks in the 70’s. Where as the outrage?
I’m dirt poor. And wish I could go to WF more often. I love that store. And I’m a die-hard conservative.
The CEO of WF was among the first to b1tch about 0-care.
Their salad bar is AWESOME! Not everything is overpriced. Shop wisely. Sometimes they have sales that beat a regular grocery store. That’s when one stocks up.
i.e. left one day with a cart full of few of every can of beans they had after a two-fer sale.
Coconut milk and cayenne pepper is the basic thai style bbq sauce.
LOL. That must be it. No lime in the coconut.
I hear ya. They have a nice clean store. The food looks beautiful. I just don’t have $400 burning a hole in my pocket to eat for a week or two. For those who can afford it, god bless em.
It’s the Brussels sprouts talking.
I recently asked a whole foods employee if they had sproutable alfalfa seeds. After some minutes on the intercomm they told me ‘no’. Berkeley Bowl. Now there’s a supermarket.
A lot of bottled water in store is municipal water that’s been “purified”....
There is a park near here where people take large containers and fill up with ‘spring water’.
“I once had brussels sprout steeped in Pink Floyd. For a short time, I understood the entire universe.”
I’m thinking they may’ve been mushrooms.
They all got loose and bred and now packs of pet rocks terrorise whole neighborhoods.
85% of organic food is exactly the same as non-organic. A laboratory could not tell the difference.

coconut milk / red or green curry dishes are very tasty.
Interesting and handy: coconut milk and coconut cream can be bought in powdered form and reconstituted. I’ve used them.
I remember when Evian water first came out. Spelled backwards...
Try juicing your asparagus. It will wake you up
