Senator Ranse Stoddard (Jimmy Stewart) returns home to a two-bit town to attend the funeral of a local rancher (John Wayne). The Senator is a legend in the town for killing a vicious outlaw named Liberty Valance (Lee Marvin) some 20 years previous. The true story of what happened that fateful night, however, is not exactly the same as the the official story....

Directed by John Ford. Co-Starring a who's-who of great western and character actors (Woody Strode, Lee Van Cleef, Andy Devine, etc.)

Just a great film. One of Ford's best, IMHO. 8.25/10.

As a huge western fan and John Wayne fan, I've always thought this was the best western ever made. Tom Doniphon is a character of tremendous depth despite what appears to be a two dimensional exterior and Wayne portrays him perfectly.

In this film, as in so many others, he appears with some of the greatest actors of his generation and simply blows them off the screen.

And probably the best song for a movie that wasn't included in the movie or trailers, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence sang by Gene Pitney and the song written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David.

That scene where he burns his home, the running and staggering from the wagon looked VERY real.

Some really great lines in this movie. I so miss John Wayne. A real man’s man. Plus a great American.

Great film. I had never watched it before, and saw it about six months ago.

Netflix has been really great for me in that way. I don’t watch television, and i can’t stand sitting through commercials, but Netflix and rentals have been great to see all those movies I never did...

Indeed, one of The Admiral's best films. It's really the story of the West.

The first 25 minutes has better writing and acting then most any modern movie.

Personally I think The Outlaw Josey Wales was the best western ever made. But I do agree with you The Man Who
Shot Liberty Valance is ranked in the top five.
