As a huge western fan and John Wayne fan, I've always thought this was the best western ever made. Tom Doniphon is a character of tremendous depth despite what appears to be a two dimensional exterior and Wayne portrays him perfectly.

In this film, as in so many others, he appears with some of the greatest actors of his generation and simply blows them off the screen.

Personally I think The Outlaw Josey Wales was the best western ever made. But I do agree with you The Man Who
Shot Liberty Valance is ranked in the top five.
