Windows 10 is a potentially great upgrade thats not quite great yet.
The new Microsoft operating system is an essential redesign. That alone makes it worth the upgrade, as I wrote last week. This week, however, Im offering a reality check.
After a week of constant use, Ive found it to be buggy compared to Windows 8.1. While not surprising for a new operating system, the point is that some less-adventurous consumers may want to wait to upgrade.
Windows 10 users have been documenting their challenges with the new Microsoft OS using the hashtag #Windows10Fail.
I wont go into the entire litany of problems (some of them are minor) but below are the standouts. Note that Microsoft issued a big cumulative update for Windows 10 on Wednesday to address a variety of issues. That update may, or may not, address some of the issues below. Time will tell.
The Start Menu: Occasionally buggy
The return of the Start Menu is the single most important change for many consumers. But its not quite stable yet. About once a day its not accessible for me. It either crashes outright or is very slow to respond.
Edge Browser: Needs work
The new Edge browser is fast -- when it's firing on all cylinders. But at times it stops responding. And at other times has trouble running some websites. (Gmail, for example, doesn't always behave itself on Edge). Again, not surprising for a spanking-new browser. There is an option to revert to Explorer, which may solve some issues: click on the three dots in the upper right-hand corner of Edge and select Open with Internet Explorer. My guess is that Edge will improve rapidly in the coming weeks and months as Microsoft issues updates.

I’d hold off upgrading until Bill Gates says,
“If you like current version of Windows you can keep it. Period.”
Sorry couldn’t resist. But if you are happy with Windows 7 why change. Until they say support is ending. Which should be years.
I just upgraded all the PCs in my house to 10 last week. True, there are bugs. More true, every PC with 10 on it runs as fast as the day I bought the PC, or faster.
Whatever behavior in Windows was deprecating the OS over time, that ‘feature’ seems to have been been yanked.
I did download and it never was able to synce my Outlook email and gave me some sort of gibberish Windows code error message saying I needed to re-download 10. . .did that. . .twice.
Still received the error message and Outlook never worked.
And ‘apps,’ what do I want with apps. I just need MS Office products and email and I am good to go.
Apparently not syncing Outlook is a regular problem.
As a non-IT professional and a basic email/MS Office product user. . when will I know when a new “service pack” is released?
Thanks.
This is why my primary software provider said wait a few months. First releases are always buggy
For some reason, Firefox keeps shutting down, shockwave flash is always a problem, Google Chrome is skittish. I have Trend Micro & Malwarbytes and I’ve had diagnostic, repair, s/w troubleshooting done, but it’s still glitchy.
I figured it was because I’m running on an old operating system.
They say there is a big update coming in October so maybe after that. I have a “spare” older laptop with win7 that I updated three days ago for trial”. It was the easiest upgrade I have ever done. I love 7 but I believe I may actually get to love this 10 more.
There has been a learning curve for me with the app stuff and as usual, everything is there but they have moved or re-named things so that has been fun learning.
There were a few glitches with waking it from sleep or having it shut down instead of restarting the first day. But after three days and another big update from MS this morning, it is really running smoothly and I have most of my programs easy to find.
‘Edge’ may be quick, but I have become so spoiled by my various ad-blocking software and settings that it was a shock to be just inundated with ads and blaring noises from seemingly all angles.
No way to stop the ads in Edge. No settings to do so. MS must have listened strictly to the advertisers...
Upgraded two of my computers.
The Acer laptop that came with Win 7 64bit, took to ten like a duck to water..no issues.
However..............
My Dell inspiron 530 turned into a brick. It’s kinda funny but the new blue screen has a frowny face on it...LOL
The issues were not with the processor or mother board, they were all related to the peripherals.
Win 10, for example, did not want to recognize my Netgear router’s optional high speed dual channel wireless option, nor did it like my Nvidia video cards. Nvidia put out a updated driver for 10, but it failed to work on my system. I have 4 monitors, all VGA flat screens from 29 inches to 46. For some reason this caused a series of crashes, many involving Flash, and some were just instability type “DPC Watchdog” major crashes. After trying for two days to make it better, the dell refused to boot and because of time constraints (it was Monday early morning and I needed this computer running by 7am) I decided to use a DVD Image restore system that I had made for this exact situation. 30 DVD’s too a while to load but I was up and running back on win 7 by 10am...
I wrote MS about this and submitted the above so that they know about it and I do not intend to try again to upgrade the Dell. it is a old Vista machine that I have a fondness for and when I replace it, I will be buying all new hardware and I doubt I will have those issues.
There will be no Service Pack 1. There will be a smaller equivalent to a Server Pack, next month i believe.
This is for those who find it difficult to find their way around Win 10. Download “GodMode” and you’ll find every thing you need in a single page.
Problems with Cortana, you will need speech recognition which you can find in GodMode.
For later.
What McGruff said.
Well, THAT didn’t take long!
I just completed my 4th Windows 10 upgrade and the ONLY problem I had was on my one Windows 7 Pro computer, I had to reinstall my Office 2010. None of the other problems mentioned have surfaced on my machines. All machines are up to date with the latest Windows 10 patches.
Because Bill Gates wants to sell your soul to whomever will buy your data.
One more thing. I use FireFox without a bit of trouble.
Win 10 is getting better and faster.
All the previous bugs when using videos or youtube appear to be eliminated.
I give it a 5 star rating. Much better than Win 7.
Go here and pick your version of Windows:

Waiting for all the backdoor exploits that allow the feds access to your computer to be discovered before I take the plunge.
Is this the GodMode you speak of?
