Taking sustainable to the extreme: Soylent meal replacement in a bottle
latimes.com ^ | Jenn Harris

Imagine drinking a beige, liquid goo every time you get hungry. Instead of steak, sushi or your favorite lunchtime salad, it's a bottle of goo, three times a day. .

That's the idea behind Soylent 2.0, a bottled meal replacement made in Los Angeles,

...

Version 2.0 includes the vitamins and minerals, algal oil, isomaltulose (a slow-metabolizing ingredient naturally found in honey) and soy protein. It's pre-bottled, has a one-year shelf life and doesn't need to be refrigerated.

The Soylent website claims each bottle contains 20% of a person's daily recommended value for essential vitamins and minerals, and 400 calories. It also describes the drink as having "a smooth texture with a subtle, delicious flavor."

If we forced this stuff on schoolchildren, it would be regarded as a bold step forward to fighting childhood obesity and an effective low cost solution for providing nutritious meals to economically-disadvantaged children determined to be most "at-risk".

If we forced this stuff on Guantanamo detainees, it would be regarded as cruelty.

Interesting...

$10 a day for 2000 calories with a complete nutrition profile sounds appealing. I’m going to have to look at how that compares to normal protein powders.

They say 1 year shelf life, which isn’t too great, but I couldn’t figure out if that goes for the powder form, too.

But yes, given the name, you would have to make sure you know whether or not it is made of people. See if they list planned parenthood as a supplier I guess..

The Soylent website claims each bottle contains 20% of a person...

I might have mis-read that.

Actually it would be a good replacement for EBTs/food-stamps.

Everything a body needs, nothing it doesn’t, easy to store, easy to prepare, easy to consume, cost effective*, fine to live on, plenty of reason to get off yer lazy a$$ and earn some real food. Waste it, you get hungry; care for it, be satiated; want more, work. Absolutely nothing here for the Left to complain about save the lack of anything to complain about.

* - yeah it’s $10/day, but it’s a single product requiring minimal shipping/handling/storage costs. That price is for the current relatively low scale of production; scale up production to federal levels, and surely the price can be driven down around SNAP’s $194/mo.

This must be tied in to Planned Parenthood somehow.

Perhaps. If they can halve the price I see lots of potential. I’d order some as an emergency supply if it was cheaper than somewhat tastey mres.

Drinking your meal 3 times a day may sound fine and easy.
Do that for a year and you will lose all your teeth.
I don’t care how superbly nutritious this beige stuff is but if gums and teeth do not get their daily requirement of exercise then they will just fall out.

And how long do you think it'll take before Planned Parenthood sees new profit centers in food additives?

Since they're already selling body parts or whole bodies, they are certain do all-Nazi for this business opportunity.

Anyone remember when FISH FLOUR was the “in” thing back in the 1960s, as a replacement for wheat flour?

The FDA put the quietius that real quick.

Now it is used for animal feed.

No one has mentioned Exploding Ass Syndrome.

When I was young I took a supplement called creatine. It caused a similar thing called “Creatine Spray”.
