MANSFIELD (CBS) — Massachusetts State Police are looking for the person who fired a gunshot at a trooper’s cruiser early Thursday morning. The trooper was in a marked state police cruiser on patrol near Forbes Road and Route 140 in Foxboro near the Mansfield line around 2:20 a.m. when he heard a loud noise from behind. He saw a “large amount of white smoke” in the area where the noise came from, according to police, “just several feet from the cruiser.” He was not hurt and his car was not damaged. “The Trooper reversed direction and observed a white male wearing light colored clothing in the wood line. The person stood up and ran into the woods,” State Police said in a statement. Officers found a black powder rifle and other items believed to have been dropped by the shooter near a Red Roof Inn in Mansfield. That type of rifle is usually used for hunting.

State and local police searched the area with dogs, a helicopter and an infrared camera, but did not find the shooter. The trooper apparently got a good look at the suspect. State Police spokesman Dave Procopio told WBZ-TV evidence suggests the shooting may have been intentional. No other information is available at this point in the investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call the State Police at 508-543-8550, Foxboro Police at 508-543-4343 or Mansfield Police at 508-261-7301.

“Hold ma beer and watch this!” Probably didn’t have a slug in the rifle. It was a ceremonial salute.

Watch... within 24 hours from now, it’ll morph:

Start: “black powder rifle”.
then: “black powder high powered rifle..”
then: “black high powered assault rifle...”
then: “Black AR15 high powered rifle...”
then: finally “WTF, it’s an AK47....”

Great headline!

It shouldn’t be too difficult to find the perp, because the gun was registered and the perp had his permit...(src)

Check the local Motel 6. If a guy’s reading a Cabela’s catalog on the pot, you’ve got your man.

I dunno how it is in the rest of the country, but there’s a pretty big shopping mall attached to nearby Gillette Stadium, sort makes the parking lot and roads dual use. (There were improvements to Route 1 and the I-95 ramps to accommodate the Gillette Stadium traffic.) They have a pretty big Bass Pro Shop, one the bigger “outdoor” stores in Massachusetts.

Before I believe any of this they’d have to show me a verified recovered slug that has a provable evidence trail.

I guess. Mostly they’re for fun, hunting and the fact you don’t have to fill out a Form 4473 to buy one. No paper trail on them. One shot and done.
