At about 8 o'clock this morning, doctors at the City of Hope Medical Center in Duarte, Calif., plan to transplant bone marrow into Anissa Ayala, a 19-year-old girl who is dying of leukemia.
The marrow will come from her baby sister, Marissa. Their parents say they conceived Marissa to provide bone marrow to save Anissa's life.
Doctors and ethicists say this is the first time a family has publicly admitted conceiving a child to serve as an organ donor. But many others have done so privately. Parents have had babies to provide bone marrow for siblings and relatives or even, in one case, a kidney. Some parents have sought prenatal diagnosis to insure that the fetus had genetically compatible tissues necessary to serve as a donor, intending to abort it if not. Debate Over Ethics
In a recent survey of bone marrow transplant centers, 40 cases were found in which families had confided to doctors that they were conceiving babies to serve as donors. But these parents have shunned publicity, leery of letting the world pry into their ordeals.
In the case of the Ayalas, their decision to conceive a child as an organ donor was declared in public for all interested parties to examine.

Someone please wake me up from this nightmare.
Once wymyn realize they can make the big bucks having “fetuses”, it’s all over. It’s coming. Look for it.
I don’t know Morganna, I have mixed feelings about this.
The new baby doesn’t die, and if it saves the other child then we have 2 miracles.
I would say both children will be loved.
Might not be the best reason to have a child, but if the child was grown, could you imagine them refusing to donate marrow to save their sibling?
Dear God, help us.
Hey, it's just a clone for organs, they aren't "really" alive or anything....
(Novella length story ebook coming out Sept 1...)
No kidding. Planned Parenthood wants to cut out the “middle-man.”
Extracting bone marrow is very painful. That is a very hard thing to ask of such a young person. What mother ever wants her child to be in pain?
Pure evil, distilled, bottled and taxed. America is trying to show Sodom, Babylon, and Ancient Rome how to really party. This will not end well.
I would rather die an excruciatingly horrible death rather than having another human being procreated with the specific intention of harvesting their body parts to save my life.
The very thought is pure evil.
I know, and that’s where my mixed feelings come in.
You asked,”What mother ever wants her child to be in pain?” I would also ask, “What mother ever wants her child to die?”
It’s not an easy decision, but this is one I think society has no right to dabble in.
If the parents are given all the facts, who am I to make that kind of decision for them.
I’m glad I’ll never have to make the decision.
I knew I was going to catch some flame for this, but...
You say you would rather die, can you project that on to your child?
Would you let your child die if a sibling, after birth, could donate bone marrow, would never remember it, and you and your wife knew that you would love that child as much as the dying child?
That’s what we’re talking about, not something like taking the heart, or lungs. That does cross the line. When that becomes the issue, I’ll be the first one on the picket line.
I’m not flaming you.
I’m speaking of my personal beliefs on the matter.
The article is about conceiving children with the intent of using them as organ donors.
That is evil.
1) I am all for medical technical advancement.
2) I do not claim to know what is happening here.
3) I suspect $atan is laughing, quite a bit.
I guess the difference is that I never considered bone marrow an organ. No other type of organ is mentioned, so either the reporter is an idiot, and misused the word organ, or I am for not knowing bone marrow is an organ.
Sorry.
Bone marrow regrows.
You know, like blood, which is generated in the bone marrow.
But the knowledge of the younger, that they were only born as a source for the other sibling?
Or worse, if the parents admit they aborted several others and kept trying (not as likely, because leukemia doesn't always wait around)...
PP gets only $300 per life. Getting half of that for the hassle of going to a clinic is probably not worth it for most of the women.
Cord blood can be used as well as bone marrow extracted from an older person.
In this case, the child’s birth is enough to provide the sample needed to save the sibling.
Are these the subject of this 1991 article? I was wondering what was the outcome.
There is a big difference here. The child conceived in order to save her sister was not killed for her bone marrow or heart or liver.
