On the verge of Windows 10's release, its predecessor has quietly moved into the #2 spot for market share among operating systems. Windows 8.1 has now overtaken Windows XP, the one time king of all operating systems, but it's something of a hollow victory as Windows 7 still leads by a wide margin.
According to Netmarketshare, as of June 2015, Windows 8.1's usage has increased to 13.12% among all operating systems, while XP sits at 11.98% and Windows 7 still accounts for a dominant 60.98% share. These three OS' also represent the only three with double digit market share.
The numbers are especially interesting since it means that over the year that Windows 7 and 8.1 users will be eligible for a free upgrade to Windows 10, after it becomes available at the end of the month, things could change rather quickly. Certainly August's numbers will look very different. Windows 10 is actually currently on the list with .16% share, due to the people who are part of the Windows Insider program who are currently testing the new OS.
Don't expect Windows 7's monster share to disappear too quickly however. Many of its users will be businesses who won't consider the upgrade to Windows 10 until they know it will work well with the rest of their systems and won't cause them any problems. Still, it will be interesting to watch these numbers evolve over the next couple of months as Windows 10 certainly has the potential to own the operating system market for a very long time.
If MS was serious about holding market share, they'd figure how to deal with this permanently. And btw I do know iOS isn't immune to these problems, but they sure appear to be a lot less prevalent.
My PC at home is ready for the 10 upgrade, needing to start doing some reading on windows 10, definitely so for I plan on taking the MCSA in the future.
The prime point is: Can Win10 escape “the dark side” of Win 3.1, Vista, 8, 8point1, into “the light side” (sunny side) of NT, 2000, XP & 7?
The underlying OS is quite good, it’s the crappy human interface that has been killing 8 and 8.1. But there is a very simple fix:
Just install “Classic Shell” and Win 8.1 turns into Win 7. After six months, it’s been exceptionally stable, and I never see the useless Metro interface.
Which Apple product did you end up purchasing?
This has been the issue on my last two PCs ran by MS. (Win 7 and 8.1).
Enough was enough, and I begrudgedly went to an Apple.
Stay away from nasty websites and you won’t have to deal with viruses and malware.
A MacBook. It has been a difficult transition, but I am slowly struggling through it.
Machines in my home are ready. In fact tomorrow during This Week In Tech’s “Windows Weekly” podcast Leo Laporte along with Mary Jo Foley and maybe Paul Thurrott will be having a Windows 10 cyber party. Mrs p6 and I intend to join in.
Nasty websites? You got a list of those to avoid? /s
Did you test on a build like 10240 or just from the website?
Somebody besides me still has XP? And even that on a limited basis. I did a reformat and reinstall on two computers with XP, only now when I open a webpage heavy in graphics, like fleabay or amazon, it loads so slowly as to be locked.
What that I need to do can only be done with W10?
The ones you visit.
Bet you appreciate the portability, the quick boot up and like you said no malware or viruses.
I picked up my first Apple back in 2009. It wan an iPhone 3GS.
It took me some time to figure it out. If I was not sure, then I would plug in my question in youtube, and sure enough a video would come right up. That way I had a visual of what I was looking for.
Anyhow, the more you use it the easier it will get.
For the record, I now have an iPhone 6 and an iPad Air.
However, I still use a Dell Laptop with Windows 7. Nevertheless, my next computer will be an Apple.
Software can easily overload ANY hardware. S/W needs to be smacked down into its proper place. M$ s/w has really never known its place.
