ESPN Pulls Colin Cowherd Off Air For Good After Comments On Dominicans

Colin Cowherd had been a lame duck at ESPN anyway, but today the sports giant said he’s done there for good. Eight days after the company said its popular radio host and sometimes TV guy was leaving its ranks, ESPN has yanked him off its airwaves over remarks he made questioning the intellect of Dominicans.

On his radio show The Herd on Thursday, Cowherd was talking about how baseball is no more of a “thinking-man’s game”

than other sports. “I’ve never bought into that whole ‘baseball is too complex,'” he said. “Really? A third of the sport is from the Dominican Republic. The Dominion Republic has not been known in my lifetime as having world-class intellectual abilities. I mean, a lot of those kids have come from rough backgrounds and have not had the opportunities academically that other kids from other countries have.” Naturally, social media had a cow, and ESPN booted Cowherd for good today. “Colin Cowherd’s comments over the past two days do not reflect the values of ESPN or our employees,” the company said in a statement. “Colin will no longer appear on ESPN.”

For the record, about one-tenth of the players on opening-day MLB rosters were Dominican.

Before getting das boot, Cowherd was back on the air this morning saying his words had been taken out of context — because most media and folks only heard the quip about “world-class intellectual abilities.” So he played the entire 57 seconds of the offending rant (it starts at the 4:07 mark above) in an attempt to defend his position. After today’s show, however, he took to Twitter to apologize:

"I did not intend to offend anyone w my comments. I realize my choice of words was poor and not reflective of who I am. I am sorry".

In general, professional baseball players aren’t the sharpest knives in the drawer.

At least they can count. They never get penalized for having too many men on the field. :)

As compared to NFL? NBA? Which group lead the ‘league’ in duhs, ya knows etc.

Widely accepted that QB's are the smartest pro athletes, but who can really tell....

You will show you are “outraged” or we will penalize you. Cowherd don’t even work for Fox but they are chastised for not “lack of reaction to the remarks”!

“The remarks drew the ire of the MLB Players Association; later that day, USA Today reported that the MLBPA was considering the possibility of “withholding cooperation” with ESPN and Fox over their lack of reaction to the remarks. Major League Baseball also condemned Cowherd for making remarks they felt were “inappropriate, offensive and...”

ESPN is the network that honored Bruce Jenner for “courage.”

Sounds like he had a Tom Brookshier moment, like when Brookshier said that the entire Louisville basketball team had a collective IQ of 50.

It’s a pretty good bet that he says something stupid nearly every day that he’s on the air. That goes for most other sports talk shows too.

Quarterbacks are definitely the smartest. And if he’s not smart he will never make it in the NFL as a quarterback. Most quarterbacks, unless their in their uniform, look like an accountant or tennis player. I would never take Aaron Rodgers as a quarterback if he were on “What’s My Line”.

Good thing he didn’t call a spade a spade.
Yeah, otherwise he wouldn't have a Chinaman's chance of ever finding work as a sports commentator.

In 2015, you NEED to be extremely smart to be an NFL quarterback. With good reason: go look at the extreme complexity of NFL playbooks for both offense and defense.

Indeed, ESPN NFL analyst Trent Dilfer--a former NFL QB--read out one time on radio the very complex verbiage written in a playbook used to describe a simple pass to a tight end. Small wonder why everyone says Andrew Luck will become the next great NFL quarterback and Marcus Mariotta may be better than many anticipate because Mariotta will be able to learn the NFL playbook very quickly.
