FULL TITLE: 'It made her shut up which made me happy': Diner owner under fire for yelling at crying toddler defends her actions

The owner of a Maine diner says she's not sorry for yelling at a 2-year-old child for crying in her restaurant because it got the girl to be quiet.

Darla Neugebauer, owner of Marcy's Diner in Portland, is defending her actions after a backlash on social media among people who say they'll never eat at the restaurant again.

She wrote on Facebook that the girl's parents ordered her three full-sized pancakes, but put the plate out of her reach, causing the girl to cry.

After 40 minutes of the noise, Neugebauer said she grew tired of the constant crying and yelled at the toddler to be quiet.

“Seems to me that most of the Africans I’ve met, don’t seem to know how, or care how to discipline their kids.”

This was a yuppie white couple so don’t go down that path.

Marcy’s is one of my breakfast hangouts in my hometown of Portland, ME. I know Darla and her husband and they are good people. Marcy’s is a very small place so getting a table* for breakfast or lunch is not easy, especialy on weekends.

* I always sit at the counter.

I was responding to A Formerly Proud Canadian’s comment about African parents in a church. Had nothing to do with Marcy’s diner.

I will make a point to visit this diner. I know I can enjoy my meal in peace.

Many years ago, when I lived in San Francisco, in the Sunday paper there was always an ad for a restaurant in the East bay, which prominently displayed the statement poster : No Brat Zone, a crying mammoth mouth overlaid by the circle/slash.

See em run wild through Walmart, the food store, the gas station, the mall, the movie theater, throwing things pushing, shoving, screaming, crying, while mommie and or daddy giggle and think it’s cute. Disgusting behavior.

I'll never forget in England in the early 70s after I was posted there from Germany. My wife and I and the year old baby boy were out doing something near Oxford and we stopped in a Wimpy’s Burger place to eat.

David (the boy) was cranky and crying and just wouldn't quiet down no matter what we did. After about 5-10 minutes (it seemed forever) we grabbed up the burgers and finally left in total embarrassment.

I will say this. Not one leer, stare, growl, grump or harrumph from any of the Brits there.

I never ate in a restaurant until I was in my teens (and only because we were on a trip four hundred miles from home.)

However, if me or my other siblings had started to whine and bawl in a restaurant when we were younger, the reaction from my father would have been swift. First a very terse warning to shut up or quit acting up, and then if that failed, physical punishment i.e. getting spanked....hard.

The real solution would be to slap the parents upside the head and then calmly tell the child that if it didn’t shut up, it would end up just like its parents....

Bingo! I hate people who don’t properly socialize their children especially on Lon aircraft flights

40 minutes? She yelled at the wrong person.

Owner says forty minutes. Mother says ten minutes. Probably in the middle somewhere. But even that is too long. I cannot understand parents who let their kids do that.
