Tiger Woods Can't Muster Old Magic in First-Round 76 at British Open
SI ^ | July 16, 2015 | Jeff Ritter

Not long ago you could bank on the Old Course bringing out the best in Tiger Woods.

This was something else entirely.

On Thursday at the 144th British Open, Woods added a new chapter to his Season of Misery, a grisly four-over 76 that left him 11 shots behind clubhouse leader Dustin Johnson with the afternoon tee times still on the course. It was a shocking result at a revered track he once dominated while winning St. Andrews Opens in 2000 and 2005.

As much as I hate to say this, Woods' career seems destined to follow in the footsteps of Ian Baker Finch. At the time Finch won his last tournament, the 1991 British Open, he was the #1 golfer in the world then went on to miss 32 cuts in a row and finally left the tour.

I like Woods, I always have and think he was the best thing to happen to pro golf in the past 25 years. He was/is outside the box in that he's not afraid to express his emotions on the course just as every one of us does.

I could care less about his personal life, it means nothing to me. For those who fawn over Nicklaus, I never liked him and felt he was nothing but an arrogant prima donna and a while back I shared an experience I had while attending a senior tournament around 1998 at the Dearborn TPC that Nicklaus was playing in and not doing very well.

As for the game of golf, it needs to evolve and generate more fan participation and excitement much like bowling did when it accepted fan cheering and yelling while the bowlers were preparing to roll.

Golf is the only sport where the crowd is prompted by the rangers to remain silent. How ridiculous is that? Even the announcers sitting in a remote booth far removed from the televised shot talk in a subdued monotone.

In terms of pressure, what's the difference between a golfer setting up for a 10' birdie putt, an NBA player preparing for a last second free throw to tie the game, or an NFL field goal kicker on the last play of the game? The difference is the crowd. The golfer demands total silence while the free throw shooter is faced with thousands of screaming fans both surrounding him and behind the backboard he his shooting for and the field goal kicker is dealing with tens of thousands of screaming spectators.

Tiger, Tiger, Tiger. I was sick of him after he won his first Masters.

Just curious, did you hate the man and if so, why?

Or did you hate him because of the MSM that was promoting him?

Where have we seen that phenomenon before?

I enjoy it when Bubba Watson encourages the crowd on the 16th tee at TPC Scottsdale. However, in football, basketball, baseball, etc they don't take points off the board when you miss the basket or goalposts, nor do you have to play the ball where it lands.

Read the European press. They don’t shield him like the American sycophants. Tiger knows who’s having trouble with the wife on the PGA tour. That may have been irate husband that was swinging the seven iron at him as he fled for his life.

I don’t hate him, just extremely tired of the media overkill. Maybe you should try reading rather than jumping to conclusions.

The in the hole cries from the crowd on a tee shot by woods on a par 4 tended to get a little stale ...

I was talking about idiots in the gallery that scream it when someone tees off on a 600 yard par five.

Exactly. Steroids.
Was going to write that Lindsey Vonn was likely draining the last of his testosterone. But they have broken up. Hmmm

True but they all determine the winner by the number of points scored.........golf is the same.

Maybe it's you who should stop jumping to conclusions, I simply stated my opinion of Woods and golf, so what's wrong with that? Sheesh......Lighten up bro

Then you must have selective hearing because the crowd does that on virtually every player out there..........

If the cameras were on the "also rans" then I would agree with you. Woods is certainly not the only player out there cursing or throwing clubs........LOL!

I watched it this morning. I watch a lot of golf, actually.

In all fairness, I despise him, even though at one time I was a fan.

His problems now seem to be mental. My guess is that he is obsessive and narcissistic.
