Barack Obama scolded a reporter at his Wednesday briefing after getting a critical question about the nuclear deal with Iran. CBS News's Major Garrett pressed the president on the imprisonment of Americans in Iran.
"As you well know, there are four Americans in Iran—three held on trumped-up charges, according to your administration, one whereabouts unknown. Can you tell the country, sir, why you are content, with all the fanfare around this deal, to leave the conscience of this nation, this strength of this nation, unaccounted for in relation to these four Americans?" Garrett asked.
"I've gotta give you credit, Major, for how you craft those questions," Obama responded. "The notion that I am content as I celebrate, with American citizens languishing in Iranian jails..."

In other words … “I’m not gonna answer your tough question. Instead, I’m gonna get all pompous on you just like I’ve done for years. It works.”
Yes, surprisingly it does work.
It’s a technique that was/is taught to Salesman in a number of industries.
It’s a reply from a position of authority or greater understanding.
Basically, it breaks down to “I know more than you. You are stupid, therefore, trust me, believe me or follow me etc”
The idea is to assert yourself as having far superior knowledge by belittling the “Person” making an objection, not the content of their objection. When done properly you can create a level of uncertainty which reinforces your authority.
Personally I could never do this but I’ve seen it in action hundreds and hundreds of times.
It does work.

The question I would have asked:
What role is Valerie Jarret playing in this deal and is there a conflict of interest since she is an Iranian by birth with ties to Muslim Brotherhood and the Mullahs in Iran?
The question he should have asked:
What role did Valerie Jarret play in this Iran deal considering she is Iranian by birth and have ties to the Iranian regime and the muslim brotherhood? And would that not be considered a conflict of interest?
