The Apple Watch disrupts, but is that enough?

Disruptive technology doesn't come along often, and is often initially dismissed because it's easy to ignore something you've lived an entire life without. But every once in a while a bit of tech comes along that makes it easier to do what you're already doing.

This is the Apple Watch.

I wasn't always sold on the concept. Aside from issues related to appearance/style, functionality, personalization, fitness tracking, and useful interaction methods, my big concern was this: What real-world problem would an Apple watch solve? Knowing the obstacles was one thing; solving those problems was something else entirely. I was skeptical.

The engineers at Apple not only understood those issues but figured out solutions. By the time Apple execs finished unveiling their vision for the modern watch last September, I was ready to give the technology a shot. As someone who's built a career around tech, I couldn't remember the last time a watch of any type inspired an emotional reaction.

Much of my excitement stemmed from the new technologies, especially the Digital Crown and Force Touch, both of which work wonderfully in the real world.

Crowning achievement

With the Digital Crown, Apple engineers turned a feature already present in watches into a scroll wheel for selecting options and quickly sliding through list views. It's used to access apps, very much like an iPhone's Home Button, when pressed. Double-pressing it switches between the last-used app and the Clock app; holding the Crown down activates Siri; and when you use it to scroll to the end of a list, it even becomes harder to turn. (That last feature shows the obsessive level of detail that's characteristic of Apple.)apple watch crown Apple

it's easy to ignore something you've lived an entire life without.

For me the article could have stopped right there.

As an ego booster to the adult juveniles whose entire sense of worth is based on the car they drive, the clothes they wear, the newest gadget to replace the "old" model from 6 months ago, it is godsend.

For most secure adults?
Not so much.

I confess that I'd like one of those new types of watches if they were under $50, which is what they would be worth to me.

This was "disruptive".

Ref. “Crossing the Chasm”. Many “disruptive” products fail, the test will be whether there is a value proposition in the eyes of mainstream users, e.g. not just Apple fans. I hope so, and the stock price soars.

Big time.

And quartz watches in general did a serious number on the Swiss watch industry for quite a while. Even today, a $50 quartz watch is likely as acurate a watch as anyone could want. Some of us prefer the craftsmanship behind a well-made mechanical or automatic, but you don't buy them because they are the most accurate watch money can buy anymore.

There have been a half dozen or so watches out there by various makers for a couple years now, all on android...and they are not being widely adopted.

Apple tried to pull another (late to the game) golden seed out of their pocket on this, but I am not seeing it..

It’s not at all like it was with the I-pod or I-phone and they need to sell a lot of these to pay for the development costs and the costs of the next generation.

I suppose the jury is still out. Or maybe the jury is not interested.

They can afford it.

No, people gotta wanna buy it, too!

The The Motley Fool (The Apple Watch Hysteria Is Out of Control — Is Apple Watch demand really a huge disappointment?) estimates that Apple has sold over 5.5 million Apple Watches in the period from April 10th through June 26th, when they put them on sale in their Apple Retail Stores and added an additional ten nations where they were available. Apple's average sales price for the Watches is a little over $500. . . that means they have a made approximately $2,750,000,000. That's a lot of people who wanted to buy it. . . and are still buying the Apple Watches.

I honestly cant think of any reason to own a smartwatch that a good Timex doesn’t already do.

I’m not saying that some killer app won’t be created at some point but, at this point in time, I can say that this device was created without considering why it was created.

A paragraph that tells me that you do not have a clue what you are talking about. . . and did not even bother to finish reading the article. . . or were more interested in bashing and insulting all Apple users. Fine asshat attitude.

The Timex tells time. That is only one App that runs on a smartwatch. . . and perhaps not even the most important.

Again, someone who did not pay attention to what the author of the article wrote.

The really disruptive watch was the spring powered watch, which replaced the pendulum.

If you have an accurate timepiece and sun/star charts, you can know your place in longitude on the Earth. If you can see the north star, you can calculate latitude, and knowing both, you can know exactly where you are.

But accurate timepieces were not available for travelers, especially on ships, because pendulum clocks wouldn't work. It wasn't until the development of the spring powered clock that sailors and explorers, and cartographers, knew exactly where they were.

That's real disruption.

Yes, it was. It was what allowed accurate navigation. Horology is a fascinating study.

It's awkward. I'm wearing a sieve eyepatch on my right eye that seems to be Scotty's transparent Aluminum from my viewpoint, but it makes my old glasses have to be worn too far forward. . . which makes reading anything really hard and proofreading what I type even more difficult, so please excuse any typos. I do appreciate all the kind thoughts and prayers from all my Freeper friends. They helped while I was waiting, during, and after.

Now I have to do the other eye in a few weeks.

I know of several apps that run on the iWatch. But they also run on the iPhone. That’s not meant to be a criticism, just an observation as to why the iWatch is an unneeded luxury at this point in time.

Again, someone who did not pay attention to what the author of the article wrote.

From what the author wrote, the disruptive device is not the watch but the phone, because the author seems almost compulsively addicted to messing with it. He likes the watch because it helps mitigate the "time suck".

People who don't have that compulsion and resulting "time suck" aren't going share his enthusiasm.

I want a watch that can emit a laser beam... capable of disintegrating a Sherman tank at 1,000 yards. It should tell time too.
