Jasper Spires boarded the Red Line Metro train at Rhode Island Avenue shortly before 1 p.m. Saturday, joining passengers from the District and elsewhere headed to various Fourth of July festivities, among them the Foo Fighters concert at RFK Stadium.
As the train rumbled toward its next stop, at NoMa-Gallaudet, a three-minute ride, D.C. police said, the 18-year-old Spires — who may have been high on synthetic drugs — tried to grab a cellphone tucked into the waistband of a recent American University graduate headed to a gathering with friends.
The two struggled, police said, and the terror began.

What was needed in that situation was a gun. Or possibly a baseball bat or equivalent — something that would let you attack him while maintaining a little bit of standoff. I’m not sure I’d have wanted to get in a knife fight with him. Good chance of getting cut that way. Without decent weapons and short of mounting a fairly coordinated group attack against him, these people may have made the right move in instinctively freezing. They all walked off the train without a scratch. This didn’t help the original victim but he was probably doomed anyway.
The rainbow was a sign to Noah that God would not destroy the earth with water again ( I believe that was the second time...) -now they want to use the rainbow against God. Good luck with that...

I started getting imaginative when I developed a fear of pitbulls or being attacked when I used to go for long walks.
Unfortunately, he was probably doomed, but I can't get over letting that POS go. A group effort would be most likely to succeed. I can't blame the onlookers as I'd have been scared $hitless, gun or no gun.
If whitey had fought back or someone helped it would have been a hate crime.
Group effort probably the best way to take out the perp given no good weapons but even then it would have been different than let’s roll on the plane. On the plane there was no escape. On this metro train it was only three minutes between stops according to the article. So you only had to avoid the killer for a short time, then the doors slide open and you’re basically home free. Also, on the plane they had time to communicate and resolve together to mount a somewhat coordinated attack. The people on the train didn’t have that chance. The more I think about it the less I blame these people.
The deceased was a liberal-assed democrat who worked for a gun-banning Connecticut politician and had a 100% score from The Brady Campaign for his steadfast support for more gun regulations.
So, in that particular case, it’s best not to get involved. Just be a good witness. You’re not a police officer, nor a paramedic. I’m sure one will show up soon enough, in any case.
Everyone on the subway car who watched him get stabbed fifty times and didn’t lift a finger to help did the right thing.

Nobody knows how they will react to actual violent real-life brutality unless they have been through it.
I’ve seen some of the toughest looking athletes I know simply freeze. I’ve also seen a shy little gal I knew respond with utter fearlessness and effective action.
Really stinks that this train was filled with the former rather than the latter. Sigh.
In the end, these left wing drones are the first put up against the wall. Sadly, he found that out the hardest way.
That said, if I was there, I would have pulled out my (legal in CA) blade and butchered the animal attacking this guy.

How is it nobody on that train had the cojones to jump the guy from behind? Even if he’s bent over the victim, stabbing him, the thug’s back is vulnerable.
Jump him from behind. His head is down near the floor. Kick him in the head. Aim for the temple. Kick hard. Aim the bottom of your heel, not your toes.
If he’s standing and you’re behind him, kick his knees out from under him.
Stab him with an ink pen, in his ear. Punch his eardrum.
I would never get on a public conveyance without a weapon of some kind. A roll of quarters in a sock, swung hard upside his head, would have dropped this animal.
Surely some effort to separate him from his knife could have been attempted.
Anyone carrying a knife for personal protection had better understand that knife fighting is a practical martial art.
Anyone carrying a knife for personal protection including using it to come to the rescue of others had better have won some knife fights in their past.

As KG9 mentioned, the victim was a two time intern for Tim Himes of Connecticut
They are conditioned to cringe and whimper, it’s all they know.
Police and a witness interviewed said passengers trapped in the moving train huddled at both ends of the car and watched in horror as Spires punched 24-year-old Kevin Joseph Sutherland until he fell to the floor, then stabbed him until he was dead.
Victim was also working for the “New Blue Initiative”.
Based on the Metro stations involved and him being identifed as living in NE DC he was also most certainly a gentrifier.

Spires stabbed Sunderland 30-40 times one of the articles says. Man. Must have not been someone able to tackle the SOB if they did not have a concealed weapon. Of course, one would want to hit the right fellow if forced to shoot.
