What Your Boss Really Means By "No One Is Getting A Raise."
Forbes ^ | 07/07/2015 | Simon Constable

We are now half way through the calendar year, and for many that means mid-year performance reviews. Or even worse, for some with odd fiscal years, it can be time for talks about money.

Both inside and outside of those meetings what you have been told can be confusing. You need to understand what your boss really means, not just what is said. Believe me, I’ve spent enough time in corporate America, and enough time in human resource jobs, to know the difference. This stuff applies whether you work for a massive multinational like Google , or General Motors GM -1.75% or a small reseller of Apple gadgets.

Let me take you through some of the more common half-truths, what they really mean, what it says about your boss, and what to do.

EXAMPLE 1

Boss: No one is getting a raise/bonus

For example: “Sorry we can’t reward your hard work this year, but no one is getting a raise.”

What it means: You are not getting a raise.

What is says about your boss. Here are some likely possibilities (explanations where necessary in parentheses):

a) Your boss is too stupid to know what’s really going on elsewhere in the company. (There are always exceptions to salary freezes and your boss should know that.)

b) Your boss is lying to your face.

c) Your boss doesn’t have enough influence to get you a raise.

d) Your boss can’t be bothered to get you a raise.

What to do: Act like you are working hard but really spend your time getting a new job.

It means find another occupation, this one you are not obviously excelling in, or swallow your arrogance and enjoy your family and just get the paycheck - God wants your focus to be family, not career.

you forgot:

f. I have a goal to maintain expenses on the P&L to XX% of revenue, and if I do I get a bonus and stock options.

And when all is said and done, he/she will still be the boss.

And you still won’t get a raise. You will just be lucky if the boss doesn’t just remind you about how hard times are, how fortunate you are to have ANY job, how you can always go to work at McDonald’s for $15/hour if you don’t like it here, how he DID let you leave 1/2 hour early on Christmas Eve, etc., etc.

The only way I ever goat a decent raise was getting a new job. That is the only time you can really negotiate a wage. I will take a low ball offer just to get a pay check while actively seeking a new job. it is a dog eat dog world.

I remember our VP’s announced that there would be no Christmas party this year because profits were down. We would all have to sacrifice...blah..blah.
Later I saw them at a very ritzy restaurant with their spouses for a Christmas party.
Liberals have no moral issue with lying so long as they think they mean well. They are protecting the company.

B an D are the most common ones for me.

Another should be “I wasn’t bowed to and worshipped enough by you.” The state government way.

A common attitude out there in HR land is that the purpose of the company is to pay people what they would like to be paid, and to ensure that everyone is provided with all of the benefits that they deserve. These people are usually shocked when they discover that the perfect social welfare company is going out of business.

Is lying to your face worse than lying behind it?

I had a boss that told everyone we were getting across the board 10% pay cuts. Come to find out he and his wife gave themselves huge raises so payroll stayed the same.

As my company’s payroll stayed flat, I’ve negotiated a greater percentage working at home. Now work from home in IT 90%+ of the time, only coming in on planned days for service matters you can’t do remotely.
As I explained, it saves me 2 hours of driving a day, gas, tolls, and reduces childcare on those days like after school care.
I also realize many people can’t negotiate that type of thing. But if you can’t get a raise, see what you can get in lieu of it.
The $500 a month in childcare I’ve saved by this strategy is more than the pay raises I might have received.

Exactly. I got crap 1.5% or 2% raises for years while the executive team was getting 5 figure bonuses. I got fed up with it and changed jobs twice in 2 years and increased my salary by 40% overall. I used to be an old fashioned company man loyal to the bone, now I am looking at least once a week for any opportunity that pays at least 20% more.

Jumping around is the only way. It is a rigged game. If you do stay too long the new hires end make MORE than the ones that have been around for 5 years. It is a stupid game.

“swallow your arrogance”

Wanting a raise is arrogance? What are you, some kind of commie that thinks everyone should be working for the “common good”, meaning the “ruling elite???
