CENTER LOVELL, Maine (AP) State police say the owner of a Maine inn who held an essay contest to give away her business made more than $900,000 through the endeavor.
The Portland Press Herald (http://bit.ly/1Ugn5dO ) reports that state police said in their investigation that Janice Sage, owner of the Center Lovell Inn, charged a $125 entry fee per essay and got 7,255 entries.
Sage won the 210-year-old inn in a similar essay contest in 1993

I actually think its a very cool idea
I don’t see why this is a state police issue, and it looks like the investigators agreed after the liberal sore losers whined. She seems to have delivered on the deal as advertised, and that is better than our politicians do.
There is a distinction between a “game of chance”(gambling) and a “game of skill” (writing an essay) in the eyes of the powers that be.
Thus the problem. They don’t want to have to compete in a fair market.
With all the real crime that is going on, this is what they tackle?
I know someone who bought a sizable ranch in Montana all on donations from people who wanted to preserve the land and aid sustainable ranching. I think the minimum donations were $10k. I thought it was a little scammy from my point of view but it certainly wasn’t illegal. People give to causes all the time.
