This weekend we celebrate the Fourth of July, high holiday of American civic religion and universal occasion for cookouts, stars-and-stripes bikinis, and raucous displays of unbridled patriotism.
More than 200 years ago, however, there was no such unanimity on the subject of the American Revolution. Though our popular history tends to avoid such off-message details, about 15 percent of white American colonists during the Revolutionary War were loyalists, and perhaps more surprisingly, close to half were effectively neutral.

"a conflict between two majority Christian armies that, in the general way of war, valued wealth and power above love and unity"
What an ignorant statement. If the Founders valued wealth and power they would of stayed with the Crown because for the most part the Founders were the elite of Colonial America.
On the other hand....
My best friend says on a daily basis he see’s no reason to celebrate the 4th of July as he believes American citizens are nothing more than pawns to the powers that be. Just look at the recent Supreme Court decisions and tell me he’s wrong.
I won’t really celebrate July 4th until the Neo-Communists are out of the White House.
Well, bless your heart darlin’. We’ll stop in and check on you from time to time.
This is a socialist, intentionally sinful nation now that is under judgement from God.
I won't celebrate that.
Bonnie, you really should try to grow up and act like a real American.
For too long the left has encouraged ethnic separatists (though they always line up at thr trough filled by whites), sexual deviants, welfare & electoral frauds, etc.; they’ve been in power for years now, so they’ll understand if I just turn my back. I’ll still pay my “rent” here (taxes), but I understand that besides serving as a piggy bank to feed the government machine and its dependents I don’t “fit”.
Patriotism is dead, and the country/government has nobody to blame but itself.
What is a “real American”? Does that mean embracing abortion and sexual deviant “rights” because the government approves? I grew up learning that average people shouldn’t have supported Nazism or Communism; what was true decades ago holds true today (even if the government is a national socialist construct).
The 4th of July has become the saddest day of the year for me.
We seem doomed to plunge into a long, bloody dark age before we see the like of the Founders’ USA again.
It seems that every year there’s less freedom to celebrate....
Yeah—this isn’t the country I grew up in and learned to love.
This is a socialist, intentionally sinful nation now that is under judgement from God.
I won’t celebrate that.
I’m not celebrating the 4th, either, although for different reasons than the moonbat who wrote that piece. After what happened on 6/26 (SCOTUS forcing sodomite “marriage” on the Fruited Plain), I consider my American citizenship little more than a box I check off on a form. To paraphrase Ronald Reagan, I didn’t leave my country, my country left me. If things ever improve (unlikely), maybe I’ll get my patriotic mojo back. But for now, fuhgeddaboutit.
I have come to the conclusion that the best way to maintain my endangered patriotism is to read about this country’s past, when America was America, not AINO(America In Name Only). I also like to listen to patriotic and military marches, to remind me of Americans of character and courage. My patriotism survives because I take time to do this—but patriotism for the real America.
The 4th is like Christmas to me. A day that has little relation to its origin, and is more of an annoying disruption than a day to celebrate anything.
Amen and that’s the TRUTH.
Couldn’t be more correct!
Last night I was watching the old wartime musical comedy “Star Spangled Rhythm” (1942). The closing bit had Bing Crosby singing a patriotic number with a large Old Glory waving behind him. Now that was the America I’d pledge my allegiance to.
America-2015? This sick, depraved nation that is now so degenerate that it equates two perverted faggots as the same as a married husband and wife? To hell with it!
Yeah, I'm the same way. The 4th reminds me of the America that was. I guess the holiday is now more like a wake.
