Stupid British vs. Japan soccer

Posted on 07/02/2015 6:39:30 PM PDT by djf

Alright I must have seen this clip a hundred times... a woman, dressed in white, kicks a soccer ball - it hits the bar, but then seems to go in, then bounces out. The goal is defended by a woman in a dark uniform with dark hair, I'm assuming she's Japanese.

Now everyone is making a big deal of this saying she "scored her own goal" or some other BS and I'm sick of it can someone PLEASE explain to me what happened?

She was attempting to break up the cross and knocked it into her own goal by mistake.

I don’t know what a “cross” is.
And as far as “knocking into her own goal” isn’t that the point? The goalie WAS Japanese, wasn’t she?

The officials at FIFI might know.

Soccer sucks. That's what happened.

It’s not a ‘British’ team, but an English team. Wales, Scotland, and Northern Island have their own soccer teams for international play.
I haven’t seen the clip myself but post #2 is I think correct. The Japanese player you mention was probably a forward if she was near the England goal.

No, the goalie was the Brit goalie and one of her teammates tried to break up a run at the goal by kicking it to her. The Brit kicked it too hard and high, her goalie couldn’t catch it so it went into the goal (past the “line”) then bounced out. So, in essence, the Brit player kicked a “goal” for the Japs...

Two types of people in the world:

1: Those who watch and complain.

2: Those who change the channel.

Dark uniform ? The goal was defended by a woman (goalie) wearing a Yellow uniform defending against Japanese attackers wearing Blue uniforms.

Goalies wear different colors because they can use their hands, and the other 10 on her side cannot..thus the goalie(s) wear unique colors.

OK.

Thank you, you explained it.

So this is just like when an NFL player gets the ball, then runs in the wrong direction. No, not exactly, because then it would be a two point touchback...

Happens all the time!

(Soccer is so fn stupid...)

Two types of people in the world:

1: Those who divide the world into two kinds of people.

2: Those who don't.

If you’re going to watch a type of football that isn’t from the US, I’d suggest rugby instead; NFL-type football was developed from that.

I don’t want to watch it, but it keeps showing up on the news.

And I see what looks like a woman kicking a goal, then she makes it, and everybody says they lose... so I still am not sure I get it.

Soccer is so stupid, it’s unbelievable!

An 'own goal' simply means that a player defending her (in the case of women's soccer) goal against the attacking team inadvertently directs the soccer ball into the goal she was defending.

It also happens in ice hockey.

It is considered among the ultimate embarrassments in sports, and fans can be quite intolerant of the goof. (IIRC) a Colombian soccer player was murdered after erring with an own goal in a game vs the USA.

Yep, you just about got it...
We watch World Cup futbol around here but would pass on an American League kind of play...
At least in American football you see some progress toward a goal...or not.
But futbol is a game of 90 minutes of intense boredom interrupted by 2 seconds of excitement...

Sorry to all...
In my explanation, I referred to the English players as British players....
Mea culpa
